20 week old. Thought it was a Roo but?

Backyard chicken hatched June 6th, got a little red comb really early so planned for it to be a boy but now I’m wondering. 20 weeks, no real prominent rooster feathering that I can see? The all black one is in question, the one with the white neck is a hatch mate that I think is a girl! Thoughts?

    Hatchery Salmon Faverolles

I have 4 (supposed to be) pullets from Murray McMurray and one is making me nervous. I ordered a bunch of sexed chicks and 3/15 turned out to be cockerels so far (a CL, Partridge Cochin and Egyptian Fayoumi). Now I’m worried one of my Faverolles is a male. Hoping she’s just has terrible coloring...

    Just an Easter Egger?

I thought this might be the CCL that I ordered but now I’m thinking just an EE? From Murray McMurray it has puffy cheeks but it’s legs are so yellow!

3/11 are cockerels? SAY IT AINT SO

Okay friends. Bad news express coming through. I have 11 babies, some are 5 weeks old and some are 4 weeks old. One of the 5 week olds is very clearly a cockerel, I think a CCL. His name is lemon, am I right? Then I have a 4 week old Egyptian Fayoumi that was my surprise chick which I know is...

Scared of how many I’ll lose

I preordered chicks from Murray McMurray back in November and this is ship week! I got notification that they shipped Tuesday night, and they still haven’t arrived. Our post office closes at 4:30 so I don’t think I’ll be able to pick them up until after 10:00AM tomorrow. I ordered 18 chicks...

Does anyone else have - Two Coops, One Run?

So I started with my 16 backyard chickens last year and got hit with chicken math. WHY ARE CHICKS SO DARN CUTE? A broody just hatched 5 babies this week and I have 18 chicks coming from McMurray next week. Even though I am giving 6 or so away to my mother-in-law, we will still need a new coop...

Broody momma hatched chicks, do I separate them?

I am second-guessing my plan so much now that the chicks are actually hatching. Originally I was planning to make a little area inside of the run with a covered dog crate and the little rabbit hutch nesting box momma is sitting in. Right now she’s in the rabbit hutch nesting box in the coop but...

Quit playing games with my heart

I have 2 pullets out of 15 laying and have been stalking the coop waiting for the next girl to drop an egg. Today I went out to scoop some poop (all casual) and found what I thought would be my third layer in the nest box!! She had pushed the fake egg out and was cozy up in there! She’s an...

Can my Cockerel help tell me who is ready to lay?

I have 15 pullets that are 23 weeks. Two confirmed layers. Some days I get an egg from each. They have been laying about 4/5 eggs each per week for the last two weeks. I am anxiously waiting for the other 13 to start laying. I do have one cockerel who is a few weeks older than the girls. I hVe...

Comb development in a Townline Olive Egger

I have 3 Olive Egger pullets from Townline hatchery. They are Cuckoo Maran/EE crosses. I am patiently waiting for them to lay eggs. They are 22 weeks as of yesterday. One has had substantial comb growth in the last few weeks. Top 3 pictures are from October 12 and bottom 3 are from today...

    Bullseye?

EE laid her first egg today and my 4 year old wanted to eat “The green egg”! We do have a cockerel, although I’ve never seen him mount any of our pullets (they all turned 21 weeks Monday) and only two are laying. so I was surprised when we cracked this and I thought I saw a bullseye- am I...

    Saved from the stew pot...

Okay- I wasn’t really prepared to eat them, but my 15 pullets turned 21 weeks old and no eggs in sight..... UNTIL TODAY! “Nicey”, a Black Sex Link laid her first egg and when I checked the nest boxes and saw it I broke out into a happy dance!! It’s the cutest, most inconspicuous egg you ever...

    Hoop Coops in the wintertime

I’ve been reading up on making a hoop coop to expand our BYC operation. I have a wooden Amish-built coop, but it’s a max capacity with the 16 we have now. I’m interested in building a permanent hoop coop to house my next flock. However, even if it has areas covered in tarps will the chickens be...

Olive Eggers from Townline Hatchery - opinions?

Anyone else have Olive Egger pullets from Townline hatchery this year? Would love to see pictures of hens that are laying and their eggs. They are fairly new - even the website doesn’t have actual images of full grown hens and eggs. Would love to see the outcomes and if they are worth it. Mine...

What type of snake? - located in Michigan USA

Hi all. When I do my chicken chores each day I let the chickens out of their coop to roam free for a bit. I saw a few gathered around the back of the run then leaping back in fear, then gathering around again. They had found a snake! It honestly is bigger than any garter snake I have seen in...

Countdown to the first egg. Buckle up, it could be awhile....

As of October 5th, my 15 pullets are 18 weeks old. I also have a cockerel from my MIL who is 2-4 weeks older. I am (im)patiently waiting for my first egg. In the meantime I’m going to post a profile for each of my chickens. One a day. Hopefully it will help the next 16 days go fast and maybe...

    Show me your Wellie Eggs!

I have 15 pullets that are going on 17 weeks old. None are laying yet. 3 of them are Welsummers and I have been drooling over the egg colors that could come from my girls. Can you show me what yours look like so it can hold me over until mine start laying(I’ll probably have to wait TEN WEEKS...
