    Confused about rooster spurs/trimming

I have a little rooster (Cochin frizzle) that, even though he is nearly 2 yrs old, never really grew and never learned to "perch" with his feet. He has always slept in a nesting box and we give him solid blocks to get up on in his run so he can be "large and in charge" because he can't get on...

    injured chick

I have some bantam chicks just about 10-12 days old and my son's dog (Eskimo) got into the laundry room last night and knocked one of them around a bit. (This dog is making me nuts - son moved back home, brought dog) I don't see any injuries, both legs and wings move and do not look broken...

    Cocci

We recently had a bout of cocci in the flock that may have actually been a biosecurity issue unwittingly brought by a visitor. Anyway, we treated with amprolium, all survived and everyone seems to be fine now and egg production is picking up. My question is, how long after we discontinued the...

    Broken blood feather

My Sultan roo, Lightning, broke a 'blood feather' on one of his feet today and it bled like crazy, all over him, all over the other chickens, etc. Brought him inside and washed his feet with antibacterial soap/warm water and then put polysporin on the wound and got it to stop bleeding. Keeping...

    Sultan roo w/injured toe

One of my Sultan roos has an injured toe - I'm not really sure what happened to it, but I don't think it's a fighting injury, and the only place there is any blood is his toe. He is in with his 'hatchmates' which includes another roo, but they get along well. It actually looks like he tore off...

    Neighbor's dog

We had seen an unfamiliar dog around out in the field a few times, figured the neighbors got a dog. I had been wary of it, only seen it a couple of times, but kept an eye out for it. So today it was IN my yard. I went out there, and got ahold of it - it's a big gangly, goofy pup, like part...

    Weird situation gets weirder

I have been trying to reintegrate my EE, Snickers, back into the flock after being in the garage for awhile to grow out feathers (she was severely naked and wounded). She was having some problems getting reaquainted, and I got some good suggestions about staying out there with her and helping...

My EE wants to be a 'house chicken'

I have one EE and she was doing fine in a pen with other Bantams, Polish, Sebrights, and a Silky roo, where she had always been. Then she lost all her feathers in a really bad molt. I mean all of 'em. Looked like something in the grocery store meat counter. And Harry was beating her up. She...

All was well...then the neighbors got a dog

We live out in the country in the middle of a farm...actually the neighbor's farm surrounds our property, but their house is about 1/4 mile down the road. There are no houses close by. We had no large predator problems (well, except hawks lately) as there is no cover around here. Then they...

    Do Brahmas go broody?

Not that I want them too, because we don't hatch anything, but my Silkies seem to spend their whole lives broody , and my D'Uccles and Cochin frizzle have been broody, heck even my Sebright tried it for a couple of days but decided she couldn't hold still that long. But I have three great big...

What's up with my Silkie roo?

I have a Silkie roo who has a Polish hen, a couple of Sebrights, and an EE in with him. A few weeks ago, when the EE was molting - and I mean bad, down to the skin all over - Harry started beating her up. This was more than the usual mating, this was mean, and these guys are all nearly 2 yrs...

OK so now he's just taunting me...

This darned hawk...the one that came and sat ON one of my covered chicken pens last week, is taunting me and my chickens making low passes through the yard - and my pens are pretty close to the house so this guy is flying right through my yard - reminding me that he is watching. I'm terrified...

    Hawk in my yard!

Looked out to check on my chooks just in time to see a huge redtail hawk LAND on one of my pens and stare intently down on my terrified birds! I threw open the door and yelled, "hey get outta here!" and he flew off. Thank goodness my Ft. Knox pens are completely covered.

    Sultan eggs?

I have some Sultans that are 26 weeks this week. I have an all-Bantam flock and 26 wks is about average for getting eggs around here. Now, I didn't buy the Sultans for eggs. When my husband asked me why I was buying 'useless chickens' I told him because they are beautiful - listed as...

Elevated coops & big, floppy feather-footed breeds

I have some Sultans in a separate coop that we bought specifically for them. Very well made, but it is one of those elevated coops over the top of the run with a long ramp underneath it. They are 16 weeks old. They will stay up in the coop nearly all day and sometimes I have to bribe them...

    chicken truck

Was riding in the car the other day on the interstate with DH and we passed a Tyson truck full of chickens on the way to the processing plant. These were obviously laying/battery hens that were 'done' and boy, did they look awful. Debeaked, of course, and ragged looking and just...tired and...

    Sultans are growing up

Latest pics of my Sultans, about 4-5 mos old now. These little guys are a lot of fun. Had to do a bit of haircutting on one of the hens, her eyes were completely covered.

    Lonely roo

I posted this under a different title, breed-specific because they are Sultans, and got no takers, but they are roos so I'll ask more generally. I have two 4-5 mo old roos, one dominant & one very laid back. They are just discovering they ARE roos and the dominant one, Lightning, is trying to...

    Sultan roos

I have five Sultans, about four-five months old, two of which are roos. I thought one of them was sick, but now I'm thinking otherwise. I'm thinking that the larger, non-dominant non-crowing roo, Zeus, is just really intimidated by the other dominant crowing roo, Lightning. There is no...

    Listen to the mockingbird

We have this very noisy mockingbird that goes through his entire repertoire of sounds all day long and into the evening. He can even imitate a hawk, although it doesn't fool my chickens, and they ignore him. Today, just as we were leaving to go grocery shopping, we saw the mockingbird...
