Good questions.
4 of 4 died. All chickens in the run. 2 of 3 in the pile heads were missing. The other chicken (head on) was behind a wooden box (trying to hide?).
Good idea to look for tracks. We have other animals (pets) so will check on that tomorrow.
As best as we can determine...
Looking for help to determine how our chickens were killed.
We live in NH. Very cold the past 24 hours - below freezing. Our chickens stay in a coop or run (completely covered in wire) during the winter.
No sign of struggle except some feather loss. No obvious entry. Quick inspect shows...
Dodge grain only has white leghorn and golden sex link pullets right now. We are looking for red sexlinks or another quite breed.
Does anyone know of a reputable breeder or another grain store that sells pullets in Rockingham county where I am located?
Hoping to pick up this weekend!
Scott
We have 10 BA pullets. Things have been going well. They are healthy and producing eggs in the first winter. About 7 eggs a day.
Today two things happened out of the ordinary. First, one of the hens went to lay/nest pretty late in the day. She remained there until dusk. Checked in on her...
6 out of 10 BA pullets. This is our first day for 6. I imagine in the next few weeks it will be around 10 a day. Once we get to that point, time to share with the neighbors! 🥚🥚
I have ten Black Australorps that are almost 27 weeks old. Only 2 of 10 are laying right now.
I would try to be patient as the days are short.
Perhaps share some pictures and the experts here can advise you how far along they are?
Good evening,
I posted we got our first egg from 10 BAs that are 26+ weeks old this week.
Now we have 3 distinct eggs. Each of a different size, getting smaller each time. Each egg is a different shade of brown also getting lighter each time.
Therefore, we think it might be more than one...
We wish you a speedy first egg for those 2 BA! 😃
We thought the same. It took a couple of weeks more than we thought. So as many people have said, try to be patient as it will happen eventually.
Good luck!
Hello all,
I posted a couple of weeks back about our first time, 10 BA pullets, 25 weeks old not laying yet.
Well our day arrived! Our first egg!
:wee:woot
The whole family is super excited! Thank you all for being supportive and helping us be patient.
Now we wait to see how many more...
Good to know. I need to buy more feed in the next week. Grower feed will be the next one.
Since they are all the same age and sex, it seemed ok to me. However, still learning and adjusting. ☺️
Aart,
Should I return them grower feed or is that too late? As I understand it, with less protein in layer feed means a slower maturation rate.
I am familiar with the debate here about whether or not layer is appropriate.
Thanks for the quick reassurance and points. I thought the time of...
