    Breed Recommendations for a newbie

I love barred rocks. They lay in cold weather. They lay in hot weather. The body size & type is excellent as bakers/stewers when they are too old to use for layers. A very useful versatile chicken. Any of the rocks are good I'm told.

Will eggs hatch after being in the fridge?

I'm going to give it a try. My last blue egg layer died of unknown causes - she had a limber neck so she may have eaten something nasty that killed her. I had 5 in the frig and one sitting on the dresser to try. We'll see if any hatch or not. If not .....it is what it is.

Borrowed a Lyon turn-x incubator- anyone know how to use??

Well I finally found instructions on Lyon. They are disguised as a "bulletin" rather than "directions". It takes a bit of surfing through their site to find it. The link above didnt' work for me which is why I kept searching about for the directions. I love this forum!

Borrowed a Lyon turn-x incubator- anyone know how to use??

I just set mine up to hatch some americana blue eggs. (I wish I had some of the real blue egg layers eggs) I found the temp should be 99.5-100 and the wet blub temp should be 84-86 degrees. I can't find the instructions so I assume I can set the temps correctly using the dial at the top for...

    Jet Stars or Production Reds

Seems I remember reading these are hybrids created by crossing a White Rock with a Rhode Island Red or was it a New Hampshire Red? Does anyone know which kind of red is used?

    If you have a dog.....

I just had to catch one of the Jack Russells today. If one of them gets loose they want the chickens. The chickens taunt them by scratching around their pens and they behave like prey when chased. I have a large greyhound mix lurcher that probably would chase them as he likes to course things...

What do you do for a living?

Quote: I love hawks! We have wild geese here that fly over and a greater blue heron that shows up in winter to sun bathe next to my little pond. But hawks have always been favorites. The red tails. I like all things wild including the land. The hawks scoped out my chickens when I first...

I'm a state certified general appraiser. I appraise residential, commercial, industrial property and land. I also rehab houses and sell them. On the side I etch and engrave on glass, paint with water based oils, make linoleum block prints and bead. Of course we have a garden, chickens...

Anyone noticing an unusually poor November egg production?

I have 18 pullets (first year layers) and I'm averaging 12 eggs per day. I'm thinking the Americanas are the biggest slackers. The RRR, Barred Rocks, NHR, & Jet Stars are the best layers. Although I have a NHR bantam and a partridge bantam hen that are both really good layers of tiny bantam...

Quote: I used a 4'X4' puppy pen with a wire floor covered in cardboard bottom and sides when they got too big for the plastic tub. Cardboard is cool. It's disposable and you can compost it or burn it when you're done.

Quote: I like your coop. Baby chicks here stay inside in a large plastic tub with sawdust or wood pellets on the bottom. I have a heat lamp held over the top by wood laid across the rim that I bolt to the plastic with wood clamps. It's important that it be well supported so it doesn't fall...
