Are Lily of the Valley Toxic to Chickens?

Thank you. I'll keep my eyes on her for a while.

Are Lily of the Valley Toxic to Chickens?

My hen got out and I caught her eating lily of the valley leaves. I thought lilies were toxic to most animals. She seems to be fine but I'm worried. It's been about 20 minutes.

    Neighbor's dog keeps nosing around...

Wow, thanks for all the great responses. We are rural residential so Okay to livestock/animals. I have tried the hose, spraying vinegar, cayenne pepper, etc. The property is on a slope so very difficult to put a fence in that particular area. Has anyone tried those sonic wave things? Will those...

    Neighbor's dog keeps nosing around...

Okay, so I house my hens right at the side of my home. The pen is on my property but is pretty close to the property line of my neighbor - like a matter of 2 feet. This neighbor lets her dogs pretty much free roam. Mind you, I keep my dogs fenced in my backyard. Anyway, one of her dogs comes...

Pullet laying "fart eggs" everyday for a week???

My EE pullet is laying "big fart eggs". Not teeny tiny but about half the size of regular store bought eggs. I'm wondering the same thing. Will they get any bigger? She's a standard to and a big girl.

    What age hens start laying?

My EE pullet was 17 weeks old last week and has laid 4 eggs into her 18th week. I noticed her comb got a lot redder prior to laying. She did the "egg song" last Monday and no egg was ever found right after the song. I think the first egg was on Wednesday and all of the eggs have been laid very...

    Oh Yeah!

Thanks to you all. I'm pretty stoked. This chicken thing is pretty exciting! I was going to blow the egg out and keep the shell. My daughter was goofing around and dropped the egg right by the coop where all the hens could see the "murder". LOL Too bad. All we can do now is wait for another one.

    Oh Yeah!

My 17 week old EE hen (Fubs) just laid her first egg. I heard her doing the "song" on Monday so I ran up to check things out = nothing. Then when I got home from work on Tuesday my husband had a surprise for me. I was bent because I wanted to find the first egg! LOL He found it in the middle of...

    New chicks and older chicks

OK so this morning I took the 3 younger Comets out to the run prior to letting the 2 bigger EE girls out of the coop. As soon as I let the big girls out they started the chasing and pecking at the Comets. I got mad and picked up each EE pullet, one at a time. I held them on the ground until they...

    New chicks and older chicks

Hmmm, interesting. I'll just keep my eyes peeled and see what goes on. They seemed to be doing better together today with their "babysitting" session, so maybe the EEs are getting used to seeing the little red. She is the one they still go after though - when they decide to. Thanks for your...

    New chicks and older chicks

Are chickens racist? I am trying to integrate 3, 2 month old Comets with 2, 4 month old EEs. All pullets. Things seem to be going fine with the exception that one of the Comets is red. The other 2 are black. The Ameraucanas intentionally isolate the red one and peck at her head and legs. They...

    EE's Hens or Roosters?

I bought 8 "Ameraucana pullets" at the South 40 feed store in Oregon. So far 6 of the 8 have developed into roosters with some pretty good pipes on em'. Needless to say I am a little discouraged with the gal I bought them from. She insisted they were all females. I bought 5 more replacements...

    EE's Hens or Roosters?

I finally got an answer to my question this morning at about 6:00am. Too bad because he's a really pretty bird. I really don't have the room to hang onto a rooster so he's going to be posted on Craigslist and advertised in the local newspaper. Darn!!! There was another poster on here with a very...

    EE's Hens or Roosters?

Oh and yeah. I think the brown one is cool looking to. I have never seen any chicken this color. He is a super sweet bird to. Easy to catch, no bullying and no sneaking up on ya'. We will likely hang onto him. I am so hooked on these chicks now that I might get into the whole incubating routine...

    EE's Hens or Roosters?

Here are some comb shots of these 3. I honestly think the browny one is a male, silver/gray pullet and white pullet. Let me know what you think. Thanks for all the input "peeps".

    EE's Hens or Roosters?

I'll keep my fingers crossed. The brownish one is the heavier of the 3 and it's legs are thicker. The only thing that keeps me hanging on is the fact that they have very little red on their faces and their neck feathers look rounder, not real pointed like the definite roosters I already...

    EE's Hens or Roosters?

I don't know if I will ever get EE's again. They sure are beautiful but I cannot tell what I have. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. There is a brown one, grey one and white one. They are right at 10 weeks old. A couple of egg-mates were a lot bigger, and had big squishy combs and...

Black chicken - what is it??

OK I'm thinking rooster. Thanks for putting up those pics. This little guy had a comb coming in the first couple of weeks. The feed store sells the EE's as Ameraucanas. Then again, I bought 8 pullets and this black rooster will be my 5th rooster out of the group! OMG

Black chicken - what is it??

I think it's a cockerel to but my husband thinks it's a confused pullet that doesn't quite know what to do now that the rest of the big cockerels are gone. Wouldn't the feathering be pointier looking on the neck? When do Australorp cockerels start to get sickle feathering on their tails? Sorry...

Black chicken - what is it??

Do pullets make goose honking noises? This one started doing it and only does it when our bantam rooster starts his crowing. It's like a weak, long, low honking. It's pretty pathetic. LOL
