Is my brown leghorn a roo?

Well, I sure am glad we got that settled! LOL She has NO black feathers on her chest. Her comb isn't red at all. and the other chick/young pullet in with her is Rusti the RIR.. and has this tiny little comb, so even if Coco's comb is normal for a young leghorn pullet... it looks HUGE...

Is my brown leghorn a roo?

Suddenly, my brown leghorn's spur spots... seem to be growing! My RIR chick has soft squishy spots where roos get spurs, but my leghorn chick has firm.. almost hard growth spots there instead. She seems very hennish in every other way to me... but I am very new to this, only a year under my...

I live in Show Low, AZ and am seeking a rooster. I would like a full size Americauna or Aricauna (or similar type breed) rooster. My husband finally said I could get one if I want to.. but it has to be between 3 days and 4 weeks of age. He wants me to raise it myself to give it the optimal...

Just rescued a duck... HELP!!! (never had a duck before)

Aflac update... So today he took a nice long warm bath, and swam around a bit... he doesn't have much water resistance, so I towel dried him and them took him out to sunbathe. I also found him hobbling around my bathroom pooping on my floor last night, so today, he has been moved outside...

Just rescued a duck... HELP!!! (never had a duck before)

Aflac is doing MUCH better. He has folded the injured leg underneath him, but he still refuses to put any weight on it. He eats and eats. He loves my layer mash, lettuce, and I had to move my dog's food because he kept hissing at my dog when he ate. I no longer believe he was someone's pet...

Just rescued a duck... HELP!!! (never had a duck before)

Quote: Sadly, No. I live wayyyy up in the mountains. All those rehabbers are hundreds of miles away. I REALLY appreciate you posting it. There is one in Humboldt.. IDK where Humboldt is, maybe that one is closer? Nope it's in the valley too. Dag nabit. I will let him float for a while...

Just rescued a duck... HELP!!! (never had a duck before)

Ok.. the mites are drastically reduced. Spur feeds didn't have anything to help with the mites.. They wanted me to use a sulphur ointment.. on feathers. SO, I used the sevin dust and the mites all ran to his head.. then he tucked his head under his wing to sleep and got sevin on his head...

Just rescued a duck... HELP!!! (never had a duck before)

Quote: He has a 2 foot by 2 foot tub that is about... 6 inches deep.. it was my dog's water dish till Aflac got here, then I scrubbed it up and gave it to him. That should work, right?

Just rescued a duck... HELP!!! (never had a duck before)

OMG! So much help! THANK YOU!! From me and Aflac... I will go to Spur Feeds tomorrow after work and see what all I can get for him. We had snow here on the mountain recently and some good tourist travel.. so there is a decent chance of me making more than $15 tomorrow at work. Yeah, he is...

Just rescued a duck... HELP!!! (never had a duck before)

I am a waitress, and I work tomorrow... so hopefully, I will make some money and can get him to Payson to see a vet. Otherwise, despite living in a very rural area.. there are not very many rehabbers up here, and the three I know of specialize in raptors... so it's likely he is stuck with me...

Just rescued a duck... HELP!!! (never had a duck before)

Ok.. So.. I was out with friends, and they decided I had to see the cute duckies sleeping at Rainbow Lake. They drove me there at like 10pm, and when we get there I see something on the dock. Looks kinda like a rumpled white jacket. I get closer, and I think it's a dead duck. I get even...

    Chickens eating each other....

Quote: What are your average winter lows in your part of Arizona? Seems they probably shouldn't need heat. My birds are in single walled coops and our average low is around 30* but we get down to the upper teens and low twenties and they do fine (these are adult birds) last year at this...

    Chickens eating each other....

This just isn't what I was looking for when I got chickens. I was gonna have a small flock.. about 6... and I was gonna have eggs to gift the neighbors... and to eat... and I was gonna sit on the porch and watch my chickens forage and scratch... Instead I sit on my porch and watch the two...

    Chickens eating each other....

What is the cheapest and most effective way to provide warmth in the coop then? I can't afford one of the $45 infared lights... I do have a plug in "oil style" radiator heater which is supposedly pretty fire safe... but I would worry about them landing on it and burning their feet.

    Chickens eating each other....

We do have a light in the hen house... it is supposed to be for warmth... we aim it up towards the ceiling... so they have it as a nightlight and some heat... but it isn't really ever DARK in the hen house.. I betcha this IS contributing to them picking at each other...

    Chickens eating each other....

We use the deep litter method inside the hen house... and just dirt in the coop (what my hubby calls the chicken yard). 12x 8 total size and 4x8 hen house 8x8 chicken yard... and then once a day they get several hours supervised time outside the coop... just running about in the yard...

    Chickens eating each other....

A few months back I posted that I had one hen (Kiko) that was pulling out feathers and bloodying the butt of another chicken (Buttercup)... I healed the injured chicken (Buttercup) in a seperate pen and put her back in with the other chickens.... Kiko promptly pulled out all her back feathers...

Pullet Butt Pecked Bloody... Isolated.. .now what?

I'll get the blukote. and we are going to put more and bigger roosts in tomorrow. I think that has a lot to do with it... right now both flocks are being forced to sleep in the same space... when they really don't like each other much. Kiko is part of the flock Buttercup rules... but I'm...

Pullet Butt Pecked Bloody... Isolated.. .now what?

They have tons of space. maybe not enough roosts... but lots of space... inside the coop and out. What does the blukote do for them? If it's an antifungal I don't understand how it helps on injuries?
