Egg song, in nest, no egg

I think Frosty finally gave us an egg. I can recognize 4 out of the 4 chickens eggs, so unless the 4th chicken lays identical eggs, she must be okay. I wonder if something was stressing her out?

Egg song, in nest, no egg

The only time Frosty ever makes the "song" has been after she has laid (while strutting around outside the coop). I just thought this was supposed to be peak production time and we have had 1 egg in 1 week. It's good our Barred Rock and Australorp have been laying almost every day. This is my...

Egg song, in nest, no egg

My RIR was my first to start laying this summer, giving us 5-6 a week of large eggs. Now she goes into the nesting box for like she's going to lay, comes out singing her egg song, but no eggs. We have only gotten one from her in the last week. Anyone experienced this?

Something pulled head off of Top Hat

My understanding from other chicken owners is that a raccoon will rip the head off and drink the blood (gory I know!). I have also heard that they can reach in through the wire and grab chickens and do some pretty serious damage that way. Sorry about your loss

What would be the best kind of dog to be around chickens and kids?

We have a great pyrenees and a great pyr mixed with australian shepherd. The full bred is still a puppy, he did not grow up with our chickens (we only have 3). they are both outside with the chickens all day (fenced in yard) and they all get along great. The only worry is a chicken getting mowed...

I have been watching for eggs too . we would keep him, but in our neighborhood we can't have roosters (though we are considering seeing what happens...). maybe the neighbors won't hear the crowing over the...

hello- I'm new here and have 3 chickens- a buff orpington, a RIR and the black australorp. the sexes were guaranteed... but AnnaClaire is looking pretty rooster-ey! she has also been the only one to make any noises that resemble crowing. I'm brand new to chickens. I believe she is 4 or 4 1/2...
