Welp, I started telling them "NO!", like I would to the dog. I kinda get in their face a little bit and make it sound harsh, because a normal no does nothing.
I started out with three buffs, then someone gave me two pekins. The buffs were loud only on occasion, enough to be amusing, but the pekins... oh Lord. They don't stop. Every day it's gotten worse.
They've been laying, all five, for about two months now. So they're mature. The buffs seemed to...
Holy cow! I forgot to say that all three buffs are female, and the pekins are possibly one male and one female, but we don't yet know for sure.
Thank you~!!!
I already have three buffs which are six months old. Now I am getting to pekin ducks that are only one month old. I don't want any ducklings to get hurt, so I'd like to know what you think. Should I separate them at first, but let them be close so they can look at each other and quack at each...
Wow, good call on the protein. They've been getting scratch and lettuce (the got into the garden a couple times!) for a little while, as we've been broke and unable to afford food for ducks and humans alike, but I discovered some leftover rabbit food from the bunny that ran away a couple months...
I have three buff ducks, all female, and one specifically has been a little dominant, mounting the other female and what-not. But today she was being viscious! My husband was so alarmed, he kept calling me out there to witness Buttercup (they are named after the Powerpuff Girls. Yes we have lots...
They were born the beginning of February, and all literature seems to say that 20 to 24 weeks is the time it takes for them to start laying, but alas, i have no eggs. Why? Am I doing something wrong? They have got to be the happiest animals I ever saw, they are alert and curious and interested...
The short question is: do domesticated ducks like my buffs often stay in the water all night? Won't they be cold? The long version is down below...
Yesterday I got the three buff ladies a kiddie pool -- quite a step up from their tiny grout-bucket pool they had before. They love it so much...
I went outside just now and discovered that my ducks were in the pond, happily taking a bath at 10:30 at night. They are so funny! Sometimes if I go out the door when it's dark, they will wake up and rush to their tiny pond, begging for some new water to be put in it. They look at the water...
They ran out of food yesterday, and the feed store isn't open till tomorrow. Will they eat chicken scratch, and would that be okay for them for one day? Or in emergencies?
Sorry, they are three weeks old today. Thank you everyone for your ideas. I'm leaning toward the plastic bin with a heat lamp inside. Going to be interesting with the electrical...
The three little ladies are now in the bathtub. But they need more room, I can tell! And I have to clean the tub out twice a day in order to be able to handle the smell. I don't know if it's making me sick or what. I desperately want to put them outside, but how? It's going to be between 55 and...
They are two week old buffs. I keep them in my bathroom, incidentally a few feet away from my bed, and in the night last night, I heard strange sounds. When I went in, it seemed that one growing duckling had been unable to get her head out of the waterer like she used to, and looked quite...
I was afraid to wait any longer, so I got nail clippers and clipped them off. I was scared! After the bands came off, they had deep indents in their legs, poor things. But yeah, it's over.
The ducks were shipped from Metzer farms, arriving this Tuesday, and they came with metal bands around one leg that were loose at the time. Boy have the girls grown, though! I just looked at the babies and the leg bands seem to be squeezing their leg meat in! I want to take them off this very...
A couple years ago a hen of mine squeezed out her own oviduct and the other chickens pulled it off her before I could figure out what had happened or what I should do, and sadly we had to put her down. Now I've come across information that says cod liver oil could prevent such a thing...
