    Barn yard chicks

I have a hen wandering around with 2 chicks. They seem to find safety in my buck barn. When should I encourage her to move to the run with them? Or should I just let her continue to free range with them? She's never lived in my coop. She and 2 "sisters" found me after hurricane Ida last year and...

Is it safe to move a nest?

I have a broody hen sitting on a nest of eggs (4) that were laid on a shelf in my goat barn. I'm worried that when the chicks hatch they'll fall and be killed. She only began sitting last Wednesday (6/1/22) so it's quite a new nest. If I move it to a safer location, i.e. a stall or even the...

Help, please! Son helped chick hatch.

My DS helped a chick hatch too soon. It's beak was visible, but it was still in the shell. When given to momma, she pecked it a bit, rolled it over, and walked away. I do not own an incubator. Is there any way I can save the chick? TIA

    Ida chickens

After hurricane Ida came through, three new chickens showed up at my home. I know where they came from. But don't know the owner. They don't exactly live near the coop where they had their chickens. Their coop has a tree limb on it and I don't see any other chickens. These chickens have been...

    Rocks vs grit

If I have rocks/stones in my run, is it necessary to leave out grit? What about oysters?

    Run advice

The dust bath poll got me thinking. This is what the inside of my run is covered in. Should I add more dirt, sand, ? Or is it ok like this. I have 3 year old chickens and 16 chicks (teenagers).

    When do roosters mature?

We suspect that one of our lavender Orpington pullets is a rooster. Today he's been running around the grow out box after the other three, and he picked a fight with one of them. They're at least 4 weeks old. Thoughts?

    Small chick

I have an Olive Egger that is smaller than the others. She eats and drinks just fine. I did remove some ick from her rear but it wasn't coming from her vent. I did notice her poop was white, but it wasn't difficult to wipe off. Any ideas? They were born 3/3.

Is my coop ready for 16 chicks?

My coop is 8'x5'9", and is taller than a grown man. My run is about the size of half a basketball court. I currently have 3 golden commets living there. I won't be able to free range until their all adult sized as I have cats. Once that's available, they'll have ¾ of an acre to roam. I live in...

    Early integration method

If I use the early integration method with my chicks, how do I prevent them from eating my layer feed for my older birds. Also, can roos eat layer feed? Or do they need something else somehow? I'm hoping one of my lavenders is a roo.

New to chicks. Am I doing it right?

These are my brand new chicks. The large group hatched 3/3. The smaller group are at least a week older, but I'm not sure of hatch date. Is this a good setup? They're inside my living room for now. I don't want to move them out until they're older/bigger.

    Duhonmommie intro

    (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I started with 5 Golden commets in September. They started laying about a month later. One of my cats got my rooster the first week, but showed us where our run was weak. Then around January I lost a hen unexpectedly. Now I'm...
