    Ah excellent. Thank you.

    Are these eggs viable?

Doesn't look like it. I don't have much hope.

    Are these eggs viable?

That's what I was thinking too, but I would hate to be wrong and toss a developing egg.

    Are these eggs viable?

A friend is incubating eggs and is wondering if these are viable. I don't see anything, but figured I'd get the expert opinions before they get tossed. The first two pics is one egg that's been incubating 9 days. The third pic has been incubating 5 days. Thanks!

    Three 8 week old broilers

$20 for the trio. I was told they were RIR/Cornish mix when I agreed to adopt them at hatching (4th grade science project). It's pretty clear at 8 weeks that there isn't any RIR in them! Since my flock is laying hens, I don't have a place here for meat birds. Elverson, PA 19520

Sicilian Buttercup 2 months old Hen or Roo?

Yeah, "she" was doing a rooster dance for one of our Seramas today I suspect you are right.

Sicilian Buttercup 2 months old Hen or Roo?

Another interesting fact, my sister (who has raised a bunch of Buttercups) said that she has had several Buttercup hens crow and take on rooster characteristics moreso than any other breed she has kept. So that gives me a little hope. I'll keep an eye on her and as long as s/he is sweet and...

Sicilian Buttercup 2 months old Hen or Roo?

Well, that figures. Here's hoping he is a nice one. My kids like to go out and catch and play with the chickens all the time. If he even looks sideways at the kids, he's outta here! I'll keep an eye on him in the next couple months and see what happens as far as new feathers and behaviors. Thanks.

Sicilian Buttercup 2 months old Hen or Roo?

Ok folks, I was SURE this chicken was a girl because she has the speckled feathers of a female Sicilian Buttercup. But she's been crowing for 2 days now! She's about 2 months old or so and has always been the most curious and troublesome of the bunch. I had my suspicions she was a roo, but when...

    Do chickens eat deer ticks?

Ok, first off I posted this 5 years ago so your opinion is not exactly timely. Second, who said anything about not feeding them?? That's completely insane. I was wondering if there could be a fringe benefit to owning them and letting them free range in my yard where the kids play. Why would...

3 Dozen Hatching Eggs for a school project near Morgantown, PA

Hey thanks for all the help folks! I am actually heading out to pick up a couple pullets to replace some of ours that were killed in a fox attack last week :( The woman I am picking the birds up from said that she should be able to come up with hatching eggs in a few months as well :) So I...

6 hens gone in one evening - Guess the predator

Wow, guys. Thanks for the info. I'm inclined to agree with the fox replies because we do have TONS of them out here - maybe I should call the fox hunt and ask them to make a sweep! I didn't think it could be a fox at first because I didn't know they would grab more than one bird, but I guess...

6 hens gone in one evening - Guess the predator

Actually we lost 9 and 3 came back :( So we are still down 6 chickens. The up side is that my 4th grader is hatching chicks this year in her science class during their embryology unit and has been begging me to be allowed to keep some, but I've been telling her no because we didn't have room...

6 hens gone in one evening - Guess the predator

Believe me, the fox hunt is a very long story... We have a fort knox predator proof coop and run with buried wire around the perimeter and everything. Nothing short of a bear is getting in and we make sure they are locked up in it when the fox hunt comes through. Since I was traveling though, I...

6 hens gone in one evening - Guess the predator

Thanks, no wolves out here, but we do have the local fox hunt club come through our property on occasion with their hounds. Hmmm, I wonder if a pack of hunting hounds would take out a chicken coop? We occasionally get coyotes too, but the neighbors have all said that they haven't heard coyotes...

6 hens gone in one evening - Guess the predator

I was out of town for a few days when my husband dropped me a note to let me know that 6 of our hens were killed in one evening. We have no idea what got them, so I was hoping for some ideas from you folks. He realized they were gone when he went out to lock them up a little late - after...
