We have a sebright/cochin cross that hatached out about 7 weeks ago. He has been doing just fine until tonight. He is housed with another cross that is smaller than he. When I went out to feed them I noticed that he was laying in the pine shavings like he was dusting but when I put my hand in...
Oh you are a new mom! We are all like that with our chicken babies and our human babies. On the 4th of July one of my hens got on the dirt road in front of my house. A tourist hit her and left her to die in the road. My hen is black and it was broad daylight so he had to see her. I was, and...
Does anyone have any idea if mosquitoes are harmful to chickens? We have chickens ranging from 1 year to 14 weeks old. For SOME reason the mosquitoes are TERRIBLE this year and the coops are just filled at times.
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Here is a little something we have learned.
My daughter likes to show her bantams at the county fair. When it is hot we put frozen bottles of 20 ounce water in their cages. One year we had a rooster freeze his wattle to it when he was lyaing by it. So, we now put the frozen bottles in old...
We hae Delawares this year for meat birds. They have free range and are allowed to go into their coop at night. We have a red light on as they have pecked in the past. (They are 14 weeks old) They have a chicken door and a roost.
The bad news is that we have lost 3. 2 we have NO idea what...
We do starter until 16 weeks. At 16 weeks we switch to layer feed and place a pan of oyster shell out for them to take as they want. It is funny, they know when they need it!
We have lots of fans, I hang newspaper in their windows during the day (the ones without fans), Their water is changed out a few times a day and ice is added, they have litter pans of cool water and I give them cool sand to "play" in. I have also been know to spray down the chicken house to...
Some breeds are more broody than others. Ours are a year old and we have 2 that are presently sitting on nests of eggs. VERY broody. They "growl" and cluck loudly,.....even peck if you try to put your hand in.
We do have another pen of newer chickens and we hae some hens that "watch out" for...
I am assuming that you are giving them an electrolyte chick starter in their water. You may need to make a little batch of a stronger starter water and get him to drink that. You may have to dip his beak a few times for him to start drinking it. GOOD LUCK!

Oh the nature of chicks and chickens!
They are HUGE food wasters and if you watch them scratch outside you can see why so much is OUT of the feeders. In the past we have taken their feeders and screwed them to boards so it is impossible for them to tip the feeder but they still love getting in...
We have a Belgian Bearded d'Uccle that is one month old. She has done great until today. Now sitting facing the wall, not eating or drinking. No signs of a pasty butt. No signs of injury. ANY ideas?!?! My daughter is just heartbroken!
Thanks so much
