New chicks arrived, one extra sleepy HELP

Oh you are a new mom! We are all like that with our chicken babies and our human babies. On the 4th of July one of my hens got on the dirt road in front of my house. A tourist hit her and left her to die in the road. My hen is black and it was broad daylight so he had to see her. I was, and...

    mosquitoes

Does anyone have any idea if mosquitoes are harmful to chickens? We have chickens ranging from 1 year to 14 weeks old. For SOME reason the mosquitoes are TERRIBLE this year and the coops are just filled at times. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

The things we do to help our chickens in the heat!

Here is a little something we have learned. My daughter likes to show her bantams at the county fair. When it is hot we put frozen bottles of 20 ounce water in their cages. One year we had a rooster freeze his wattle to it when he was lyaing by it. So, we now put the frozen bottles in old...

how can you tell if a hen is broody?

Some breeds are more broody than others. Ours are a year old and we have 2 that are presently sitting on nests of eggs. VERY broody. They "growl" and cluck loudly,.....even peck if you try to put your hand in. We do have another pen of newer chickens and we hae some hens that "watch out" for...

New chicks arrived, one extra sleepy HELP

I am assuming that you are giving them an electrolyte chick starter in their water. You may need to make a little batch of a stronger starter water and get him to drink that. You may have to dip his beak a few times for him to start drinking it. GOOD LUCK! Myia

Baby Chicks keep dumping out their food

Oh the nature of chicks and chickens! They are HUGE food wasters and if you watch them scratch outside you can see why so much is OUT of the feeders. In the past we have taken their feeders and screwed them to boards so it is impossible for them to tip the feeder but they still love getting in...
