I'm at the end of my feather...need help for feather eating chickens

I have put a video on you tube of my chickens with peepers on. I'm using them to help with the pecking. Take a look if you haven't seen them in action. Just go to You tube and type in Maggiemoo's Little Acre . There are five different episodes. Episode #5 shows the peepers.

I'm at the end of my feather...need help for feather eating chickens

I have the same pecking problems that you all seem to have. I got rid of the one who was the worst offender. Needless to say the others seem to have taken her place in the "Feather eating" domain! I have chickens that will just sit and let the others eat away at them. Even the ones that are bare...

Just curious who else is living super frugal

My husband and I have always tried to be somewhat frugal, he more than I. He was raised by parents that went through the depression so he was used to wearing high-water pants in high school. If you know what I mean! We have always done almost all of our own work. If we needed something built or...

Coop flooring-What kind is in yours?

My 7'x10' shed has a wooden floor. I have covered that with a heavy plastic that is secured down along the outer edges. I use pine shavings that can easily be swept out because of the plastic. I have had the plastic down for 8 months and have had no problems with it. Relatively cheep in the...

How many of you use foodgrade DE?

I use it in the coop mixed into the shavings, on the roost and poop board and in the nest. I also use it in the garden when I see signs of bugs.

Does it matter what you make a nest box out of ?

I built three next boxes in a row. Each is about 14x14 with a top. Most of the girls will lay in there but someone, I don't know who, keeps laying over in a corner. I figured I would solve the problem and put a milk crate in the same corner with pine shavings in it. So far so good. Found three...

Ok Arizona Folks... I'm coming to visit

Quote: Thank you. My biggest concern with taking the train (which I really want to do) is how I'll get around once I get to the canyon. I assume there's tours to take and such... No offense but I still get lost around here (I've been in this area 3 years) so the last thing I need is to be...

    Brahma Thread

Quote: Thanks for asking about Teddy. I don't know how much he weighs. I do know that he is at least twice as heavy as the girls. He is 24 weeks old.

    Brahma Thread

This is a pic of my dark Brahma with the girls. I don't have any others to compare him to. He is my only one. What do you think? He is really good with the girls but has to be re-homed due to the noise levels when he's awake. That could be any time, day or night!

    24 weeks and beautiful!

Here are the latest pics of my babies. They have been laying for almost 4 weeks now and today I got 6 eggs from 8 pullets. I made the hard decision to re-home my handsome roo a couple of days ago. It's much quieter around here now and the girls don't seem to mind. They are more restful, NO MORE...

There are also Indian ruins throughout the area if you are into that.

Ok Arizona Folks... I'm coming to visit

The canyon is beautiful and will take about 3-31/2 hours for you to drive there. An early start will be in order. There is a train that will take you from Williams to the Grand Canyon. Check it out on the internet for schedules. After seeing the canyon you could stay in Flagstaff or drive on...

Ok Arizona Folks... I'm coming to visit

Will you have the entire 3.5 days to do whatever you want or do you have other obligations during that time? The Canyon will take an entire day and I would suggest staying over night in Sedona. Lots of hiking trails and a beautiful place to visit.

Rehoming 9 of my 10 cockerels today

I took my first ever roo to the feed store yesterday and rehomed him to a fellow that works there. I really hated to do it. I have grown quite fond of him. He's tame and is really good with the girls. The problem is that I promised my DH that I wouldn't keep any roos if he would agree to...

    Good Brooding Hutch??? (PICTS)

Looks very similar to mine. I have mine divided down the middle in case I need to separate the chicks. I separated the laying chicks from the meat chicks. Have you given thought to the way you will water and feed. I installed a nipple waterer and a trough feeder. The tubing with the nipples ran...

    Arizona Chickens

I'll agree it's COLD out there. I also haven't checked the plants. Don't see too much need at this point. They will either make it or they won't. My 23 week old pullets gave me 6 little eggs today. Not bad I think from 8 chickens. They have only been laying for 3 weeks now. I have a question for...

At what point do you stop your Roo?

I guess I will be going to the closet and cutting up some of my old jeans to try my hand at saddles. I have two hens with the feathers off of the top of their tails and another hen with the feathers coming off more down along her upper thighs. I guess he rides her differently. It will be...

At what point do you stop your Roo?

Don't want to seem dumb but I'm having a hard time picturing how the saddle goes on the hen. I have looked at lovemychix site and from the picture given, does the large end go towards the chickens tail or towards the head? I am assuming that the wings go through the straps.

At what point do you stop your Roo?

Quote: This saddle looks like it is padded. Is it? I really like to sew so will probably try my luck making my own. If I can't figure it out I may look up Tess and get one from her. It's just too bad that the whole "chicken sex" has to be so complicated.
