    How lonely is one chicken?

Greetings! We started raising our flock of 6 chickens back in April of 2010. We are down to only 2 girls, and we are wondering what will happen when there is only one left (we have lost 2 hens in the past 2 months, so it might happen sooner rather than later). These are strictly pets, so...

    sigh...3 broody hens!

What are the chances that 3 out of 6 hens would be broody at the same time? I guess that we are just lucky, huh?

    cheese?

I tried looking it up but couldn't find any info....can chickens eat cheese? Just trying to find more treats to give the girls. We often have that shredded cheddar cheese left in the packets that doesn't get eaten...would be nice to give it to the girls instead of eventually throwing it away...

    close call!!!!

OK....just a short while ago, I heard a strange noise from the backyard and looked out at the girls. All 6 were in one corner of their run, frantically moving back and forth. I go out there to see what is causing the disturbance and realize that a HAWK is in the covered run with them! Poor...

    Suet?

Hi all.....I did some research on this site and the info (from 2 years ago) seems to be split - is it OK to give chickens suet? I know that it is high in fat, but I thought that with these cold, cold temps that we've been having, it would be fine for a special treat. We haven't been above...

    wheezing or complaining?

OK, so down here in Atlanta we are still shut down from the snow we got on Sunday night. Our girls flat out refused to come out of the coop yesterday but have ventured out today. One of our Buffs is making a wheezing type sound. She is acting normal, eating and drinking just fine, but makes...

    Southern snow chickens!

How many of you are in the south and covered today with snow? We live in Atlanta and have about 4.5 inches on the ground. The girls were so funny this morning when we opened up the coop door...they wouldn't move! Too funny! Anyone else out there experiencing this?

    Broody...what to do?

OK....I think that from reading posts here and in books, etc., that we have a broody hen. We were out of town for a few days and forgot to ask our chicken care taker to gather the eggs while we were gone. When we got back, there were 7 eggs in the nest boxes and Pearl was sitting on them...

    pulling out feathers?

I noticed today that one of our buff orps was pulling out feathers from her back. After seeing this, I looked around at their favorite spots in the yard (they free-range all day) and found a small pile of her feathers under our deck. She hatched in early March and we are not sure if she or the...

feeding egg shells to the girls....

We have been saving the egg shells from our girls and want to give them back as a supplement. Suggestions? I've heard that you should wash, dry and bake them. If so, what temp and how long? If not, then how do you prepare them? thanks!

    'winterizing' a coop!?

Hi everyone! OK, I know that temps are hot everywhere right now, but I'm wondering what to do to get our coop ready for winter. We live in Atlanta, so winters are not horrible, but we do get down to temps in the 20's and sometimes the teens at night. We even had 3 snow days (2"-4") this past...

    new layer....question!

Hi there! One of our hens, Americauna or EE (I don't really know), started laying a couple of weeks ago. She was "on" for 5 days in a row and then took 3 days off. For the past 7 days she has been giving us eggs! Now, the rest of the hens are not laying and are supposed to give us brown eggs...
