The one in the back left of your second pic looks like a golden penciled hamburg. I have one of those and yours looks identical.

    Taking chicken to school question

Thanks to everyone who posted. I did end up taking 2 8 week old chicks to school today. The kids had a great time and did really well with the chicks. I'm pretty sure my son's public school would not have allowed it had they known. I believe it was kind of a covert mission. I believe my...

    Head smells like canned peas

Hi Marie, We Never did figure it out. She still smells funky. My son thinks she smells like ketchup. She is active, Is always eating, does a hilarious covert running thing where she will dart to one spot, bob her head to one side, then the other, then run and pounce at the next spot. It's so...

When to switch my different age chicks to finisher/grower feed

Thanks for clearing that up for me! For some reason I thought you switch food at 8 weeks and I thought grower/finisher was the same thing. Did I mess up by having my chicks on chick starter for so long? The feed store is closed Mondays so I won't be able to switch them over until Tuesday.

When to switch my different age chicks to finisher/grower feed

I have 13 chicks that just turned 8 weeks on Friday, and 5 chicks that are 2.5 weeks behind them in age. How do I switch the older ones to grower/ finisher with the younger ones in there? Do I just wait until they are all old enough? Or split the age difference?

    Taking chicken to school question

My 11 year old son did a report already, even took an egg in on her request. She really wants to see the chicken! Now that I've been knocked to my senses by the first response, I'm happy to take one in, just want to keep it contained. I care about my chickens way too much! I believe I am...

Blue Cochin roosters free to good home

II am looking for a good home for 5 roosters who needed to be hens. If you live in or near MA and would like a handsome blue Cochin boy or two, please contact me. I can send pics on request. I have one that is almost white with one little blue splash on it, one that is (in my opinion) a dark...

    Taking chicken to school question

Thanks for the input everyone! I'm such an overprotective chicken mama. I would prefer to be inside because I'm afraid the little guy will get loose and We'll lose him. we actually have 5 cockerels we can't keep and I was going to take one of them, so it's not like we're even keeping him, but...

Need Advice ASAP. New Birds Joining Flock.

There is no sure fire way to smoothly introduce new chickens to a flock in my opinion. I recently even had trouble with chicks that were 2 and a half weeks apart. They could see each other in the brooder, had supervised playtime that went well, but when I removed them from their dog crate to...

    Taking chicken to school question

I am curious to know if my biosecurity concerns are legit or not. My 11 year olds teacher has been dying for me to bring in one of our chicks. I was able to skirt the issue for a while by telling her they had to be under a heat lamp until they were 5 weeks old, but I ran into her yesterday and...

    cochin roos???

To The Jade Chicken...I'm curious now about what you said. You think the 3rd pic is iffy...I noticed that the tail feathers on the 3rd pic look like our girl Cochin, but it has the bright pink comb/wattle. Is it actually possible it might be a she??? Peeka52. I would love to keep any of them...

    cochin roos???

What a bummer! I have a feeling I'm going to have a hard time finding anyone to take them without slaughtering them.

    cochin roos???

I think 5 of our 6 blue cochins are roos. I'd love to see what everyone here thinks. In the first picture I have what I think is a roo in the back and (while it's not a great pic), the only blue cochin I have that seems to be a hen. They will be 8 weeks tomorrow. The other pics I think are...
