Wet spot in coop :( HELP!!!!

Finally got my 9 week old chicks/pullets(?) not sure when they become pullets.....into their coop yesterday. It is raining like crazy today, non-stop pouring. I went to check on them and have found a damp spot right in the middle of the floor. They have obviously scratched the 5 inches of...

    Infrared light or heat emitter

They seem very happy right now. So happy that they knocked over their waterer somehow and I just had to muck out the wet bedding and replace it! They keep poking their noses out into the rain....hmmmmmm.....what is the wet stuff? Meanwhile the ducks are happily sitting in their pool while it's...

    Infrared light or heat emitter

I have searched on the site and I realize there are a number of different opinions on to heat or not to heat the coops, but I am still left with a few questions. I just put my 9 week old girls in the coop yesterday. They have been in the house since they were a day old. It was sunny yesterday...

    First Snow

I can see the snow on the top of the mountains, but all we're getting down here in the Snoqualmie Valley is rain, rain, rain. Just yesterday we had 1.87" and it hasn't stopped! The ducks have discovered slugs, though and they are in heaven! Their house is staying cozy and dry....this was the...

    Introduction: we got duckies!

I hope to have many ducks one day, I like the name Sir Francis Drake. My idea is to go with Shakespearean characters. I will be the crazy duck lady, but i will be the literate crazy duck lady. A distinction. Beth That would be infinitely better than mine whom are all named after video game...

Thanks for the advice and warnings. They will be well heeded. I don't think we have 2 circuits out there, but we might because we have an electric fence and I know my husband said he had to do something to make sure the circuits wouldn't be overloaded. Was going to use the 250w infrared light I...

    Finally!

Quote: They've been out side running around with me watching them, but within 15 minutes, we have our 2 neighbourhood eagles circling. Scares me. They were in the run all day today. I think they were a little freaked out! Whooooaaaaa. All this space and fresh air and stuff to peck at! Yippee...

    Finally!

Quote: I can't free range them...too many predators. Had to wait until predator proof run was finally finished, so they've been in the house for almost 2 months and I'm about to go insane. They'll have another 900 sq ft area to roam around in during the day in the spring. Anyway, I know they...

    Finally!

Quote: Broodica, I do not have an answer for you, but i thought the above remark was funny. Maybe katharina or bleenie (both in your state i think) will be here soon to answer. i think they are pretty hardy, but do not listen to anything i say. i am a vicarious duck owner for now...

Quote: Oh that is an awful big jump in temperature...but I am not a duck person. I keep heat lamps on every coop I can when it gets that cold....or at least have insulated and double paned windows....I don't know, I would put a lamp in but high enough so they are not too warm, you want them to...

Hello - Newbie here...well relatively...Finally got my ducks out of the bathroom and into the run just today. They won't go near the duck house of course. But it was 33F last night and they are going from a relatively warm bathroom. I'm thinking of bringing them back in for the night or would...

    Material for duck run?

We have a new 150 sqft duck run and new to this. We put down pea gravel and sand over top aka Storey, but he suggests cedar chips for on top of the sand? Would wood chips work? Or Hay? Straw? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

    Finally!

Our duck house and run are done. Time for the 4 girls to go in!!!! They're 7-8 weeks old (Mallards and 1 Rouen) and we all need them to be outside and out of my bathroom!!!! We have a 4x4 sqft house, about 8" off the ground. The bottom is wood. They'll be getting a pool this week. I am going to...

    Innate duck alarm system....check

True, but I think my 14 yo son must have been a duck in a previous life. He can zone in on a bug or salamander from 500 feet and is sure bears and cougars are after us when we sit out at the point at night!

Feeding medicated feed to new ducklings ?'s

I think you will find 2 definite sides to this issue, but from my understanding, neither Bactricin nor Amprolium are dangerous to ducks. That being said, I chose to raise mine on non-medicated feed. I didn't want to take any chances.

    Innate duck alarm system....check

I love watching birds. Fascinated by them in every way. This is my first time raising ducks and chickens and I would love to be with them all day just observing. They have all been in my house for the past 5 weeks and I am utterly entranced and boring people to death on here with my comments and...

    Innate duck alarm system....check

Had the two older ducklings outside to catch some rays, bugs, whatever. Ms/Mr Aggressive only butted big galoot Rouen a couple of times. Was about 5 feet away from them and they both suddenly hunkered down, heads tilted sideways, looking up. I looked up and YIKES! Huge bald eagle happily...
