    Sick Peahens

I do not know where to start but I have been dealing with sick peahens and am at my wits end trying to figure out what is wrong. The problems first started in late August/early September when I noticed one of the hens in my big pen had deteriorating feather quality, as if she wasn't preening...

    Odd Colored Chick

One of my hens hatched out a late clutch early this week. There are six chicks 2 white, 1 pied, 2 india blue split white/dp, and 1 chick that seems noticeably darker than the other two india blues. I may be wrong and the other two chicks might be lighter than normal but I don't think I've seen a...

    Genetic Ownership

Hey, So I have raised cornish crosses in the past and I know they usually don't make it to breeding age, and they don't breed true but on the off chance one made it to breeding age and I wanted to experiment with breeding them would there be any issues with genetic ownership. I know a lot of...

    Potential Problem in Processing

Hello all, earlier this summer (roughly 7 weeks ago) I purchased broiler chicks for the first time, and just processed the first half of them yesterday. I put them in ice water afterwards as all the guides recommend - but I am afraid i removed and froze them too quickly. I misunderstood and...

    Identification Help Needed

Hi all, I have not posted in quite some time (been busy with college/life in general) but I'm back, and I need help identifying two peahens. They are clearly BS but I suspect they are also something more. The story is that my dad got them from a business associate of his who didn't know anything...

    Using broody hens

I've been a bad bycer and haven't been on in a while but I'm back! I was wondering about using hens to incubate pea eggs, I have some a broody Orpington and an Australorp who seems like she's going to go broody and I was wondering if any of you ever used hens to hatch peas. If so how many eggs...

    I think I have a girl with a parasite

I have a hen who has been acting really sluggish for at least two weeks now she lets her wings droop and scrunches up her neck too. I think she must have a parasite that's leaching her of her energy but I don't know what, some kind of worm? Any advice would be appreciated! She didn't even move...

    The Great (peafowl) Escape

I've been offline for a while but that doesn't mean I haven't been busy! I was busy one day this week and my dad had to feed my birds that evening. He thought he closed the door on my largest group (27 two year olds) but apparently not. It has one of those hook latch things that's supposed to...

    Ivy on a pea pen?

I just got a very interesting idea, what if I planted ivy around a pea pen? I wanted to plant morning glories at first but my dad (a florist) said they're toxic and also cause hallucinations haha I don't need tripped out peacocks. So then I thought about just creepy ivy like you see on...

Am I dealing with a broken wing??

I can out to feed the birds today and a young male hatched this summer has a droopy wing, we just moved them so he could have broken it flying into to wire of his new pen or something.[/IMG][/IMG] He doesn't appear to be in pain but he's not lifting it at all, what should I do???

    New males!!!

I just got six beautiful new males from a fellow byc member and they're in with my two year olds now! They look gorgeous especially the black shoulders! There was a little bit of tussling and bully as is to be expected but nothing bad the males might get used to each other in just a few days...

    Catching escaped peacocks!

This Saturday we had a bit of a jailbreak, all 21 of our yearlings got out! I was horrified when I heard this but all but two had been recaptured by my dad and his employees by the time I got there. We got one of those two the next day but the male flew off. Now we got information about where he...

    Sex Ratio

For the last two seasons I have hatched way more hen than cocks. Of the 21 hatched last year only 5 are males and of the 6 hatched the year before only 1 was. My mom thinks that incubator temperature has something to do with it but I dont. I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem and...

    First eggs in the incubator

I just set my first four pea eggs of the year. They are all ut of my dark pied male, pied hen pen. I will keep updating this thread as the season continues. I am hoping to hatch about the same number of chicks as last year (21). Maybe more but I'm not sure if I have the space/market for that...

    Pheasant chick care

My grandpa gave me some pheasant chicks out of the blue last year, and I did not really have time to do much research on caring for them. Needless to say I was not ready for the slaughter fest, I read a few suggestions to keep them from killing each other but none worked. Now the survivors are...

    Tropical Plant Idea

My dad is a florist and every summer we have a garden with tropical plants like giant elephant ears, banana trees, huge agapanthus and many other species at one corner of our house (the other sides are flanked with hydrangeas that are cut back every year) . We can have this tropical garden...

    Removing chicks from their mom

Last year one of our hens sat on and hatched four eggs. The chicks hatched in mid september and I know I am going to have to remove them soon. Does anyone have any tips to make the transition less stressful for all the birds? Their are six birds in the pen, mom dad and the four babies if that helps.

Is it possible that a peacock could have genetically bad legs?

I have a male peacock who developed a limp this summer. The limp seemed to correct itself but it came ack in November. His legs look fine so I suspect the problem is in his hips. It seems like something turned his hips like 30 degrees in one direction. This causes his train to slump off to that...

    Best Livestock guardian breeds

I have a jack russel who is great with our birds, she would not hurt any of them. She killed two guineas when we first got her but we have trained her not to do that and she has been very good about it. She would not even hurt the babies, we had a few duckling pop the glass panels out of the...
