My silkie keeps her head tucked under her

A few days ago I noticed that one of my silkies is keeping her head tucked underneath her. I go and pet her and she just picks her head up and rolls it back under her repeatedly. If I pick her up and set her down then she'll walk around normally for a while...then goes back to tucking her...

    Wanted: Silkie hens in Massachusetts

I am looking for 2 silkies (no roosters) in Massachusetts. I'm open to different colors but I'd prefer splash, white or buff. I'm open to paying for shipping and open to prices.

    Strange Silkie death

Today I went out to discover one of my white silkies dead in the nesting box. I have no idea why. No injuries. The past 2 days or so she hasn't been herself. When let out of the run she would just stand there instead of walking around doing chicken stuff. Another silkie of mine is showing...

Serious mold problem with Playhouse coop and sand

I built my playhouse coop out of a little tykes playhouse. I put a wood floor on it and did my best to seal all windows etc. I've been using pine shavings about 4-5 inches thick and after a while the bottom gets very wet. Last week I switched to sand to see what it would be like. I'm not sure...

Bottom of pine shavings wet and moldy. Why?

I'm having an issue with my coop and am wondering if you guys can help reason why. When I clean out my pine shavings which I pile about 6 inches high, the bottom 3-4 inches are completely soaked. It's even in the hard to reach places where the chickens don't get to. When the girls dig up the...

Should I put sod in my run?

My run is actually where a garden used to be. I like the idea of the birds running around on grass but I'm not sure of the consequences. This is a stupid question but if I put sod in there, will I have to cut the grass or will the 4 girls just kind of destroy it and prevent it from overgrowing?

One of my silkies died today. Advice. [Dead bird picture warning]

I am at work now and my girlfriend called to say that she was checking on the girls and she found one of them dead in the run. It's definitely a sad moment. I have to try and figure out what happened to her to make sure it doesn't happen to the rest of the 4 girls. I have to figure out whether...

New Chicken Angst. Some questions about doors, stupid birds and more

I have 5 girls. 2 White Silkies 1 Gray Silky 2 Cochins I have an automatic door to the coop that I had set to open at 6:30 AM and close at 5:30PM (It gets dark here around 4:30 now) The 2 white silkies are by far the dumbest and they go out some time during the day and pretty much every single...

My coop design work seems to have been in vain

I turned a little tykes into a chicken coop, spent a lot of time planning it and building it and my chickens don't seem to be using it the way I thought they would be. I picked up these birds yesterday (Sunday) Issues: 1. They refuse to use the ramp. If I put them inside they stay inside. If...

My birds are in their new home but not eating?

I got 3 silkies and 2 pekins yesterday. They are all about 6-7 months old. I bought a 50 pound bag of organic Green Mountain layer pellets they don't seem to want to eat any of it. Is the opening of my feeder too small? Do they not like this food? Are they just nervous? If I feed them chopped...

My first coop and run: Build in progress

I figured I'd document my adventure from the beginning in the hopes that I can gather advice along the way as well as motivate myself to continue. During this long weekend I took advantage of some of my free time to get started. Day 1: Sept 4 Scrapped my original plans to build a coop from...

Totally new: Planning coop would like opinions and ideas

Let me preface this by saying that I just found this site and a friend of mine turned me on to owning some hens. Please excuse my stupid questions. I have a 2 level garden which isn't being used. I was thinking of using the lower level to house the coop and the run. Here is the design: The...
