I know what you mean about thinking skunks are nocturnal. I came home today at 1PM and I heard my six ladies squawking from their outside perch, so I peek in the coop and there's a possum lookin back at me. Fortunately all my birds are fine, but they're still outside afraid to go in the coop. I...
I have 5 pullets 2 RIR's, 2 EE's and 1 BO. I was hoping by now at least one of the gals would be laying but no such luck. I have a RIR that is 1 year old and is laying 5/6 per wk, but with the holidays the DW needs some eggs for baking. Looks like I'll have to get some eggs from the supermarket.:
If an egg is bad it breaks down and gives off gas, thus a rotten egg will float in water. It may also be a lil "off" before the float effect, but if it floats I wouldn't eat it.
We rescued a chicken this year and it took 5-6 weeks to start laying again. The chicken was the sole survivor after her coop was broken into by some critter. She is a 1 yr old RIR. When she started laying again, it was like she didn't miss a beat. She only started laying on November 10th, and...
I have a RIR that lays in a 12" round plastic planter under my deck. I thought she stopped laying for a few days due to the cold weather, but then I heard her under the deck and there she was. I thought she was dusting herself(planter is full if dirt) but when she got up there was an egg. I...
I have found all but one egg in the coop. In the coop she laid most in the box, but 2 I found in the middle of the coop floor. The one that she laid at 3:30 pm was in a 12" round flower pot about 20' from the coop. I know what time she laid it because DD came home at 3 and no egg, and I found it...
I have a 1 year old RIR that justed started laying eggs for me about 2 weeks ago. We got her from a family whose coop was raided by a critter, and she (Cheddar) was the lone survivor. She stopped laying for about 5 weeks, and now is back laying consistently. In fact as of today it is 8 days...
The dog attack could also be a contributing factor. We have a RIR that just started laying again. She had just started to lay, when there was an attack in the coop from some critter. She took about 6 weeks to start laying again, and has been laying consistently ever since. Unfortunately the...

When Cheddy (that's what we named her) got her groove back. She laid an egg!! We were getting ready to leave for a long weekend and I gave a quick peek into the coop and there it was! It was a long 4 weeks wondering if she'd ever lay again. Her broken beak hasn't really changed much in...

Anybody know what happened to the Hudson Valley Chickens yahoo group page? I tried to click on the page, and it says: Group not Found.
I was on the page yesterday, does anyone know if it's a temporary thing or is Hudson Valley Chickens a thing of the past? Hopefully it's the former and not the...
I am keeping an eye on her diet, more specifically I am seeing what is coming out! She is eating layena crumble supplemented with yogurt and mashed apples. She scratches in the yard and pecks away, although I don't know how successful her pecking is. As inexperienced as I am I do think she is...
I know how you feel. I have alot of bears by me, and I've had them break into my coop. Only thing to do is enclose your pen in a chain link fence( with the top enclosed) and or hot wire. Trust the bear will be back. Here's a recent pic of an S.O.B. walking thru my backyard:
