I'm sorry, but discussion about the kosher status of Araucanas, Ameraucanas, and Silkies is utter, complete nonsense. These are all 100% chickens, and chickens are 100% kosher. The vast majority of serious kashrut agencies recognize this, but there has been a bit of hysteria over the last couple...
Thanks! I was worried about that. I may not know much, LOL, but I do know vocabulary. This bird's sex does appears to be male. But birds don't really have genders.
She (I use the pronoun with hope) is only 2 1/2 months old, so I'm not holding my breath for eggs anytime soon. The more I look into it, the more obvious it is that she is part Silkie. Dark skin, dark comb and wattles, 5 toes, extreme friendliness and willingness to perch on my arm or shoulder, etc.
This little girl (or guy) was dropped off to me today. She was hatched in April for some sort of class project, and I agreed to take her in. I would love to hear some ideas about her possible breed. She is black, mottled with white, has a bit bit of a crest forming, and has lightly feathered...
In terms of marketing eggs in the US, I believe that allowing chickens any access to the outside, no matter how small, is enough to be able to call them free range, according to USDA.
Chickens are now legal in Barrington, RI, and I have been enjoying mine legally in Providence for 10 months or so. This is from the Providence Journal earlier this month:
Chickens are an animal whose time has come, according to Ken Ayars, chief of the state Division of Agriculture. He estimates...
Looking to add to my flock in Providence, RI. I currently have Leghorns and Polish, so something a bit different would be good for variety. Otherwise, I am open to adding one or two of just about any breed of laying hen, no older than about 1 1/2 - 2 years old.
Hi guys. Apparently, the pullet I obtained some months back is really a cockeral, and he's starting to make noise. Problem is, I live in Providence and am now running a-fowl of the local chicken ordinance. Someone complained to animal control, so I have to move this boy immediately! Can anyone...
Technically, PROVIDENCE allows its residents up to six chickens per property. Rhode Island has nothing to do with it. Shoot, if all of Providence could only have 6 chickens, I'd be in trouble!! ;-)
In posts like this, it helps GREATLY to know where you are. Northeast? Midwest? New Zealand? If you are in many parts of the West, then you would be under the County regulations. And, as always, the LACK of regulations concerning chickens means you can have chickens.
The people behind the recent success in Providence are organizing a meeting this Sunday to get the ball rolling in neighboring communities. I am pasting their message:
