I found our Polish crested laying dead on pen floor the other evening. She was only 2 and was the one that my granddaughter showed in 4H. None of the other birds are acting different. Any thoughts as to what might have happened? Lot of tears were shed!
Lots of trees, shrubs and a coop to go in. The 2 that I found the hawk with were in tree areas. Wish it wasn't illegal to shoot the hawk. Still see the hawk occasionally even though they are closed in the coop due to extreme cold here.
This fall a hawk got my free range flock and I only have 5 chickens left. Moved ducks in with turkeys and opened chicken coop up in to duck pen so they could get out and stretch a bit. All pens covered with mesh. Question is can they go back to free ranging in the spring or will hawk still go...
We believe we have lost about 1/2 of our flock to a red-tail hawk. Only have 7 birds left and lose 1 every couple days. They go out free range in the morning and 1 less comes in in the evening. We want to put the ducks in with the turkeys and then put a door in the coop into the duck pen...
Can we winter our 2 Mallards (1 male and 1 female) and 1 East Indies ducks with our 2 male turkeys? We need the duck pen for our free range chickens that keep getting taken off by a hawk, we think.
My granddaughter came running in the house yesterday holding up an egg. She found it under a shade tree (our chickens are free range). So I have now filled all the nesting boxes with newly cut grass. Hopefully we will soon have more eggs to enjoy.
We started out in the Spring with a duck. Then we added some chicks and the whole thing has just mushroomed out from there. We now have 5 turkeys, 6 ducks, 16 chickens (one of whom has recently started crowing all day) and 2 pigs. We hope to add a couple cows some day soon. My father-in-law...
We have lost free range chickens that didn't get to the coop by dark. We lost a baby turkey to a red tail hawk because there was no "roof" on the pen. And we had a turkey fly out of the pen during the night and a coyote (we think) took him. Ducks have flown out but I've recaptured and put...
