The color may look wrong because you have it on a brown background (the deck railing). Colors tend to look different depending on what color they are near, it's an optical illusion. Try taking a picture of it on a white background like the OP and it should show it's true colors.

The coagulant powder product for dogs is called styptic powder and is sold under various brands/names. The one I use is Nik Stop. I'm not promoting that brand, it just happens to be the one my pet supply store sells. It does work very well to stop bleeding. And I agree that fasting...
How old are they now? I'm very new to chickens, so take my observations with a grain of salt. I just gave up my 11 week old rooster yesterday and am still upset about it. This is my first set of chickens I have raised...ever, but I had a "feeling" that this particular chicken was a rooster...
Glad to meet you!! It sounds like you have a great menagerie of animals! Isn't it fun? I have 2 Golden Retrievers, 2 Americaunas, 1 Buff Orpington, 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes, and 1 Brown Leghorn. Hoping for my first eggs in February...cant' wait!
Ridgerunner - Thanks so much for your post! You explained everything so well. I definitely feel like I have a good grasp on feeding my flock now.
So today I gave them some chick scratch on a plastic food container lid in the run. Wouldn't you know, they spilled it all on the sand in no time...
We've been having terrible fruit fly problems in the house for the past two weeks in Northern CA. My mom (also CA) says she is having trouble with them in her house as well, and hubby has them at his work. I think it's just a bad fruit fly time of the year.

Thank you for the picture tutorial!! I had managed to get a picture into the upload area, but didn't know what to do after that. And thanks for answering my other questions too!
I'm going to check my other feed store for grower or FlockRaiser. The one I went to yesterday didn't...

Thanks 2DogsFarm!
I can't figure out how to post a picture here or I would show you what the "chick scratch" looks like. If you can tell me how, I'll post a pic. Basically it looks like ground up chicken scratch - very small particles of corn, wheat, etc.
I have two 6 week Americaunas, a 7 week Buff Orpington, and a 7 week White Leghorn. I've been feeding them only chick starter from day one. The feed store said to switch them to laying crumbles at 8 weeks, but I know everyone here says to wait until they are laying/about to lay. So I'm not...
Thanks elmo and everyone else! I think you're right and she was just adjusting her crop. I have 2 Americaunas and they look identical and neither has a comb yet, so I think I'm pretty safe. Phew, I feel better now! These are my first chicks and it is just fascinating to watch them!
I just checked on the girls and my favorite chick (a 4 week Americauna) was walking around the brooding pen opening her beak repeatedly as if she was crowing, but no sound was coming out. At first I was worried that something was stuck in her throat, but she was walking around normal except for...
We're in the process of building our first coop right now. We used pressure treated wood for the base that contacts the ground, and regular wood for the rest of the coop framing and the run. I'm using Thompson's WaterSeal for all of the exposed wood and will paint the coop once we get the...
Hi all! I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and have been lurking here for the past few weeks since I got my chicks and love all the great advice and inspiration I find. We have 2 Americaunas (George and Gracie) who are 4 weeks old today, 1 Buff Orpington (Delta Dawn) and 1 White Leghorn...
