1) What type of bird , age and weight.: 4 chicks, about 8 weeks old
2)What is the behavior, exactly: One of the chicks is fluffed up, sneezing, watery eyes, and "pumps" her neck. She keeps stretching her neck out as she opens her mouth. Her breathing is not raspy. She hasn't grown in two...
Do chickens need water in the night?
I put all of the girls in the coop part of the henhouse, and closed the door last night. Then this morning I went and opened it. But then it occured to me that they had no water ALL NIGHT!
Is that ok? Or am I a mean chicken mama?
Thanks Pat.
I took the coarsest sand they had at the yard. It's not dusty, its very granular. The man said that it only had sand in it - nothing else. I bought two yards so hopefully it's enough!
I did some poking about on the net, and it seems that River sand is not available in my part of Canada. Only concrete sand, which is a coarse sand. I think it's going to have to do!
I have been trying to find River sand, but each place I call tries to sell me concrete sand. Is it the same thing? I asked if it comes from a river and they said no. It's made.
What other choices do I have if I can't find River sand? I am in South Western Ontario, Canada.
This is an older thread, but I am hoping to revive it! Where in Ontario do people order specialty chicks from? It seems that most Canadian hatcheries only carry the basics, and certainly don't offer supplies like the US hatcheries do.
How cold do your winters get? that would make a difference - ie. in terms of what can be left open to air flow
I like the idea of a door that doubles as a window. Could you find an old window on Kijiji or at the Habitat Restore, and put it on hinges somehow? It would save you a lot of time and...
Thanks Rivers, it's going to be underneath about 6 inches of river sand, so hopefully even if it does rust it will keep critters out?
So far materials have cost us about $870. We got the windows at the Habitat Restore, and the wood was on sale. We got the wire from Kijiji, and the shingles...

Will I need another "step" at the very top of the ramp?
I love this part, he hinged it so that I can hook it to the ceiling for easy cleaning of the run area.
This has to go on a pulley system, so I am looking for ideas...
We are still finishing it. But here is what we have so far.
We used pressure treated lumber for the base, and weedcloth in the run area. That area will be filled with river sand.
A close up of the run area, we put chicken wire underneath just in case something managed to dig underneath and...
I am not set up for Roos! This fellow was sold to me as a hen, but the fabulous folks on this board identified him as a Rooster. So if someone can give him a good home, I would be delighted to say goodbye to him. I am about an hour north of Toronto.
Local pick up only please.
Note: It didn't...
I thought about using this:

We use it to protect the dogs feet in the winter?
I am checking in! We are in Orangeville Ontario - and new to chickens. We have 6 at the moment and are trying to determine if they are hens or roos. We also breed Highland Cattle, and have 4 dogs and a parrot.
I went to the Fall Mt.Forest sale, likely the mistake of a newbie. LOL! Everyone was probably getting rid of their roos.
I am in South Western Ontario- and will likely need some pullets to get me through the winter. I will PM you!
We are brand new to farming, and jumped in with two feet. We now have a wee herd of Highland cattle, and thought we had hens, but thanks to the experts on this board it looks like we have a flock of roosters. LOL!!!! Wish I could drag you all along with me when I buy these things. Hee hee
