I used to store our feed in those big square kitty litter buckets that are sturdy, space efficient, and have great lids. Then the mice started to chew through them so we switched to metal trash cans.
We live on a 3/4 acre lot in the Houston city limits in an older neighborhood that permits chickens but I'm not sure about roosters. I've never checked, but we did ask our closest neighbors before we had any roosters and they told us it would not bother them. Both had childhood memories of...
In October of 2010 I was reading an old Time magazine while waiting to be called for my mammogram and found a fascinating article about the number of people keeping "backyard chickens", exchanging information on websites and having weekend swapmeets. I had never had chickens but my husband's...
Last Christmas I bought a small string of white lights that are solar-powered so they're not as bright and they turn on and off by themselves. It provides a dim background light in the coop for my chickens.
I rinse off the eggshells and put them in one of those hanging metal baskets over my sink. When I get a bunch I spread them on a cookie sheet and bake them for about 15 minutes at 350 (doing this while the oven is warming up for baking is a good idea). Then I throw them into the food processor...
Welcome, Chickenannie and kids! We joined the BYC chicken world about 15 months ago and love it! We have 6 black Jersey Giants, 2 silkies, several bantam Cochins and 4 "assorted" chickens from the feed store, a total of 2 roosters and 12 hens. The teenagers are 27 weeks old so those 3 hens just...
1) I enjoy learning, so learning about chicks, coops, and chickens (thanks BYC!) has been a great experience.
2) This is an interest that my husband and I can share, and keeps me active outside.
3) It is endlessly entertaining to watch them.
My experience is similar to AOXA's. I have Jersey Giant, silkie, and cochin hens, all taken care of by a bantam rooster. The pecking order seems to be more dependent on age than size. It is very funny to see my little gray silkie hen chest bump one of the JG's!
I have a small bunch of solar Christmas lights hanging in the corner opposite the roosts and next boxes. It is just a little bit light, but enough for me to look in through the window and see them, dim enough for them to settle down and sleep, but also enough that they are not totally "out of...
We started out with only hens and before we got a rooster we talked to our neighbors on both sides of us. It turned out that the family closer to us, about 50 feet from our back-yard coop, actually likes the sounds of a rooster crowing because they have childhood memories of visiting their...
I love the Derp stories and pictures and got my first shirt! Thanks so much for sharing her stories. I've tried but can't really explain her appeal to other "non-chicken" people, but then we knew that...
I never wash the eggs unless they have sand or a little mess on them that might fall into the dish or pan when I am using them. I even sell them a little dirty- I tell people that way they know they're genuine yard eggs!
I watched my chickens stand around in the rain on Sunday also. When it got really heavy the older chickens went into the coop, but the 4 "teenagers" who had never been in the rain stayed out all day and seemed to enjoy tromping around in the mud. Since it wasn't cold I wasn't worried.
Yes, we need to see a picture of Megatron!
I love the story and the name. I am going to "borrow" it for my loud, honking, bawking Jersy Giant hen. We have a lovely Cochin rooster named Artie with a melodious crow who is often drowned out by the loudmouthed hen, now named Megatron.
