    Whole Dried Peas?

Can/Should you feed chickens whole dried spring planted peas? I feed wheat whole, crack the corn in summer and leave it whole in the winter. The peas are larger than the wheat but smaller than the whole dried corn. I have a large electric crimper/cracker and it cracks super fast but is this...

    Cleaning incubators between hatching

What do you all use to clean your incubators/turners between hatching or before storing? Bleach, the special brinsea solution or another solution on the market? The fan in my Genesis 1588 gets lots of chick dust, etc. I was thinking compressed air to blow it out as you would use for a...

RE: Mom is Orp, Dad is?

After disappearing for over a month and a half, one of my Black/Lav. split orps appeared with 3 little chicks who are now 7 weeks old. All 3 have a distinctive orpington body shape. Two are girls, one is all black (looks just like a mini mom), the other looks like a barred rock chick, thin...

    Re: Probios?

Never hear of anyone giving their chickens Probios probiotics after worming, times of stress, medicating, etc. Only yogurt or buttermilk for the probiotics. I would think a product specifically formulated for animals as a probiotic would be more potent and effective. Thoughts, experiences????

    Re: No Better Life :)

Went to check on the mixed flock this morning, they have an auto door and free range all day but I go down every morning about an hour after the door opens to clean under the roosts, water, check things out, etc. The grown hens and roos are always outside, rain or shine. They came running to...

    Re: Hen w/broken wing

One of my breeder Delaware hens (lovely girl) has a broken wing. I have researched how to figure 8 wrap it using vetwrap and have been doing that unsuccessfully for the last 3 days. As soon as I put her down she starts pulling at the vetwrap and by morning it is off the injured wing and the...

    Purchasing foreclosed property through Auction.com???

This particular auction is online bidding only. I have heard that the starting bid price is way lower than the actual reserve, that the auction site can make bids to get people excited, that even if you bid past the reserve the seller reserves the right to not sell you the property, etc., etc...

    Re: Round Worms

I have been keeping an eye on one of my year and a half old white leghorn hens. She has not looked quite right or laid an egg for about a week. Last night found her outside the coop instead of inside roosting with the clan. Picked her up, put her on the roost and she fell off So, she is...

    Re: BCM tumor on breast

We culled a 5 1/2 month old BCM roo this evening, he was far from SOP so needed to go. Upon beginning to skin him, found a good, 2" tumor/lump on his breast, did not cut into it, just disposed of the bird. He had been slightly limping for about 2 weeks, upon a thorough going over could find...

Early hatcher, take out or leave in

Lock down last night, day 18, early this AM 4 pips, one has hatched already. Before I have any more pips, should I pluck the little guy out, I am afraid he will be in there too long before everyone else hatches but I don't want to risk harming the rest of the hatch by opening up and changing...

Hen dead - blood loss, shock or something else?

Went out tonight to lock up the boys and girls and one of my white leghorns was on her normal spot on the roost among her 53 mixed flock roomies covered in blood. I noticed a nick on the tip of one of the points on her comb and her comb was really pale. It was still dripping blood so I assumed...

Todays fertile eggs/incubate immediately or wait

Should you wait a couple of days before putting fresh (todays) fertile eggs in the incubator or put in right away? I know on mailed ones you should wait 12 - 24 hours to allow them to come up to room temp. I read somewhere fresh eggs should sit 3 days before putting in the incubator............???

Wanting to hear how others deal with breeding in free-range flocks with multiple roosters/breeds. 1. How are your breeding pens set-up? 2. How long do you separate Rooster/hens from the main flock before collecting your eggs to incubate and ideal ratio of 1 roo to ? hens? 3. How do you...

    Americauna or Black/Lav Split Orpington

This hen should be either a Black/Lav. Split Orpington (sent as packing peanuts with my order) or one of several Black or Blue Americaunas that I actually ordered. I have 3 of these girls that look similar. Two more I have are obvious Orps, but maybe they are roos? (they are almost twice the...

    Americauna or Easter Egger

This hen was sold to me at 4 weeks old as a "pure" splash americauna. I was told by the breeder if I bred her to a black americauna I would have blue americauna offspring. She is now 20 weeks old, no pea comb, very little splash and lots of gold around her neck. Is she americauna or EE? Does...
