Hi all! Sorry for the time of not updating or answering questions, I have been very sick with the flu the past little while.
I got the final report from the lab, and he says they all did have a clostridial enteritis, as well as yeast in the crops of 2 of the birds. It appears that my treatment...
Well, I got the initial report from the state lab on my 3 polish girls that died within 2 days. The doctor actually just called me too and we discussed a few things in the report. So, this is what it comes down to...
All 3 had what is called Clostridial enteritis and severe typhlitis. Basically...
There are 2 things that are hitting me as odd with this diagnosis....first, it seems to be mostly common in commercial broiler chickens (these were Polish Laced ladies)....second is that it says it affects most birds by 25 weeks (these guys were about a year). Guess I have t wait until more test...
Ok, somehow missed a call from the doctor with some results...
He said that the chickens did have severe intestinal problems that COULD be botulism, but he thinks they also had necrotic enteritis?? Of course I am reading up on it big time right now, and I am trying to figure out where in the...
No, my neighbors actually think the chickens are cool. I asked them about the crowing, and it's no big deal. We live in a very rural area with lots of farms, so hearing chickens crow is nothing new in this area. The runs are pretty far from the neighbors, so I don't think anything they may be...
Well took the dead birds up to the lab. The doctor was awesome. He said it sounds like a case of botulism as well, but he is going to run a bunch of tests and let me know. He is also going ot send me a copy of his report, and gave me the name of a great avian vet in the area. So it should be a...
Thanks Lydia!
I just talked to the state lab guy Dr. Miller. He is SO nice! I am taking the 3 bodies up to him at 11am for him to do necropsies on them (for free!). He said it sounds like botulism as well, but he wants to check and at least rule out other things. He told me to get the healthy...

Lydia, we don't have any poison anywhere, I don't believe in it. Plus, we don't have any issues that we would need it.
What is the molasses flush?? Anything to make it easier on them at this point is what I will do. I am going to have to treat the other 2 birds for SOMETHING, I just...
Well apparently last night we lost not only the one hen we knew was going to go, but another one is outside dead as well that was just fine at 7 this morning. She is just laying on the concrete pad right outside of their coop, and I have no idea what happened to her. The roo seems fine, and we...
Ok, doing some reading on common chicken illnesses (http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044), it almost sounds like botulism...but I have NO idea where they could have gotten ahold of any infected material to eat. Tomorrow I am going out to the coop and completely cleaning and disinfecting everything...

Thanks Lydia!
Well the roo is doing better after eating a little. He turned back into his normal self. The girl, however, is heading down the same road as the one last night, and is just getting worse. We gave her a nice warm shower and a blow dry, hoping maybe it would help, but no...
Last night we lost one of our Polish pullets (almost a year old) to something strange...she was found barely able to sit up, not moving, feet freezing. She died within hours of us finding her after being brought in to the heat. Now, after being fine all morning, 2 more of the Polish gang are...
So yesterday was strange...in the morning, the entire flock seemed ok. Then we headed off to the farm show...a few hours into it, my daughter texts me with "we have a chicken emergency"...I call her to find out that our bearded polish hen (about a year old now) is not moving much, barely able to...
Here is another odd place to find bulk pine shavings....if you have any reptile shows/expos near you, someone usually carries them there fairly cheap (if you let me know where you are, I can tell you where the shows are). Lots of snake keepers use pine or other wood shavings for their snakes...
