coffeegirl78's chicken pages
Welcome!
I'm Chelsea, and I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with my husband and daughter. We currently have what we like to call a "backyard farm". We live in a smallish town, and have a fair sized city lot. On this lot, we manage to squeeze in bantam...
So after a community survey, the city here is finally recommending chickens to the City Council. This is after they turned it down, one person saying something along the lines of "My neighbors had chickens when I was a kid, and they smelled awful", which was her reason for a no vote. The City's...
Spish- When we had cavies in the past I built a great cage from that website
I'm really trying to talk dh into cavies again. Our dd will be 5 soon and she's kind of afraid of our rabbits (we raise and show mini rex). I'm thinking cavies would be great to get her started in 4-H. He is pretty...
Anyone in the Salem/pdx/other nearby places have Marek's vaccine that they are planning to admin? They are sold out nationwide, and I don't want to have to buy a whole bottle for 5-6 chicks anyway. It's a longshot I know, but if you have some that you're going to use and we're close to each...

I never had vaccinated birds in 14+ years....until now. We had a random outbreak from who knows where, and our birds started dying left and right. We had to put them all down eventually. I think this is an important step to make when acquiring new chicks.
I am a firm believer that a woman's body knows how to birth-sounds like you have had some large babies and turned out fine. Sometimes doctors/medwives (yes mEd) try to push a c-sec on you because they are fearful that a woman can not get a 9+lb baby out safely. This just isn't so. I've seen a...
Could you get one of those little barn looking sheds with a half loft? You would need help getting the hay up there for storage, but it's pretty easy to pull down. Just stand back!
Hi all- not sure where to post this. Long story short- our healthy flock of 12+ years had a Marek's outbreak last fall, and we had to dispose of our backyard hens. Now we are getting geared up for chicks but wonder what our options are. I know we can order vaccinated chicks, but we do not need...

Yup. Fuzzy Lop!
Every once in a while, my Holland Lops have thrown a Fuzzy. Fuzzies are pretty much a Holland Lop with a French Angora coat. His color is Tortoiseshell, btw.
Agreed! He's cute!
This is an old thread, but I wanted to add my 2 cents. I say get it- a small flock does not make you exempt from Marek's. My flock of 5 hens were infected with Marek's from wild critters, and they all had to be killed. We will be starting our flock over next spring with all vaccinated chicks. It...
I think a little Holland lop or mini rex can be an excellent pet for a respectable child this age. I raise mini rex but we chose a Holland lop for our 3.5 yo daughter. Whatever breed you choose, make sure it has been handled and is not wild. This may leave a bad taste in your daughter's mouth...
I had to remove all of my chickens because we somehow got Mareks on our property. I have considered getting doves but want to know if doves and pigeons can get Mareks before I do so.
