That is so correct, I do not have the room at all. I have a large coop, 10 x 12 and the run is 10x20, but that is not very large if we are talking about 20 chickens! Man, I cant believe I have 20 chickens! Well some are more then likley going to be roosters, and I can not keep those but I...
I really do want them all together but I cant because they are trying to kill the mama. So I have the mama and the chicks in the kenel in the coop where eveyone can see each other. When I try to blend them together then they attach the mama. They dont bother with the chicks just the mama.
I have not tried that yet. I have 10 chickens, minus the mama is 9 and I dont have a seperate pen for them, just the dog crate that the mama and chicks are in now. Do you think I should try to seperate them now? or wait until she is done with raising the chicks?
I thought mine was the dominant due to the fighting that started after she was locked up in her broody cage for a week, but now I dont know. She does start to fight back and then she runs off squaking. She just acts petrified. Which who can blame her, its not one on one here, its 4 on one!
It is really driving me crazy! I am going to wait for the mama to finish up with the chicks, then put them all together again and when I figure out who the culprit is, I will give her a home in the garage in a cage for a week. Then try to intergrate them back together. So much extra work! I...
I hope someone has some ideas too. I am hoping that half the problem is she is still so occupied with the chicks that she is not willing to defend herself?? Grabbing at straws here. Thanks for the response.
Thanks Winisk, I do not have a rooster and even while free ranging, (which is very limited in my yard) they still ganged up on her. She is now petrified to be with the other chickens. I am going to wait until after she is done with the chicks and then I think I will put her back with the...
Well I guess no one really has any advice on this so can I ask a question? If I try this again and find the "angry birds" and take them out of the coop and in to the garage in a dog kennel for say a week and then reintorduce them back. Does this have a chance of working? Has anyone had say a...
So how is this working for you? I am having the same problem with mine right now too. The chicks are 3 weeks and the other chickens seem to have booted the mama chicken from the flock. Every time she gets around them 3 to 5 birds will jump her. Did you figure anything out?
They are cute. I know the little buggers can really grow on ya!
Problem is that the chicks are fine with the other chickens. They for the most part just ignore them all together. Its the mama I cant get back in the flock. They have been in the coop in a dog kennel that all were visible to...
No one? Well I tried again this weekend to mix her in with the flock. The babies are starting to seperate a bit from her so while they were busy scratching I put mama in a large fenced garden (long story but the chickens get my garden this year) and with in 1 minute 3 of them were on her. Is...
I am having the worst time with this! The truth is the flock seems to be ignoring the chicks, no one has tried to attack yet, but mama wants to attach everyone and she is getting her butt whipped! One chicken will start to attach her and then others join in and I am at a loss at what to do...
Thanks Chickenreferee, I was thinking that maybe removing the cage might make a difference. She thinks of it as the nursery and they are intruding. I think I will give it a try this weekend, slowly one chicken by one chicken.
Marlowmanor, that is why I seperated my broody, I came up with 3...
I am happy to report that my Isa Brown is a great mama. She takes such good care of the chicks. But I do have a problem. It seems that the other chickens are pretty much leaving the chicks alone. I have mama and babies in the coop in a large wire dog kenel so all the chickens can see the...
