Oyster Shell fed Silkie still laying soft empty shells.

I've been mixing oyster shell crumble in with the lyena feed for over a month and am still getting an empty soft shell from one of my silkies. I feed her DE and dust her for mites often. Her weight is good , she is not molting, and she looks healthy. What could be wrong?

Official BYC Poll: The Worst Predator

In California I lost a few to possums. We've since moved to Maryland and lost a flock to a fox. We also had a hawk get one. I'm fighting mites right now and it's turning in to prime predator season, so I'm getting nervous. I hate to keep them locked up when they love to free range.

    Poultry Predator Identification

I too had a possum kill a chicken on two separate times. Both times we heard the comotion and caught the possum in the act. My husband beat it with a baseball bat. I can't let my girls free range because of the red tail hawks. We already had one nasty attack. The chicken mad it, but lost an...

HELP - First aid for a silkie bantam attacked by a Red Tail Hawk.

This is great info. I really value your advise, and am kind of choked up at how much you seem to understand. I fried an egg in olive oil this morning and Sheba ate the whole thing! Tomorrow I'm going to mix the egg with a scrape of asprin, like you suggested, and give her some vitamin water...

HELP - First aid for a silkie bantam attacked by a Red Tail Hawk.

You are so very kind! I've been washing her eye out twice a day with warm salt water. I put her in a box and she is now in our laundry room. She has her own food, water & nesting box. She is still eating and drinking water, so I am hopeful. We are really not in a financial position to be...

HELP - First aid for a silkie bantam attacked by a Red Tail Hawk.

Would penicillian work? I think I may have hurt her eye by washing her face with peroxide. I'm using warm salt water now. If I were to give her asprin, how much?

HELP - First aid for a silkie bantam attacked by a Red Tail Hawk.

Would teramycin work? What about tripple antibiotic? I think it's eye goo that is oozing. If I could figure out what to type between the , I'd upload a picture of the damage to her eye.

HELP - First aid for a silkie bantam attacked by a Red Tail Hawk.

I had a red tail fly under the hen house (which was mostly protected) grab the largest bird and try to eat her right there. When my husband managed to run at them, the hawk couldn't lift the hen to make a get-a-way. She is breathing fine and eating and drinking normally. It looks like the...

Help: Treating a bird from a Hawk Attack

She is breathing fine. It looks like the hawk grabbed her haed and punctured her eye. I cleaned it with peroxide as was suggested, then put tripple antibiotic ointment over that side of her face. That side is really swollen, but she seems no worse for wear. None of the bantams have any...

Help: Treating a bird from a Hawk Attack

I had a red tail fly under the hen house (which was mostly protected) grab the largest bird and try to eat her right there. When my husband managed to run at them, the hawk couldn't lift the hen to make a get-a-way. This happened to my silkie bantam yesterday. She is alive, but was stunned at...
