We are thankful for Hillandale Farms, its a local grain mill. I get ALL my feed there. 100lb for about 20 dollars, layer starter...ect. I even get a great goat feed there. And I did notice that the ammonia level in my bird's feces has gone down. The odor is a lot less and my goats have had...
Not anymore huddled than when they were in the house. The cage seems as warm as it was in the day time. When you open the tarp you feel the air is warmer. There are 50 babies in this cage that is 3 ft by 4 ft by 2 ft.
COTURNIX quail, and its not a Heat lamp per say its a 100 watt bulb. Its more to take the chill off the cage. I also dont see any rain in our forecast so I dont foresee any wetness. Thanks for the tip though.
We are in North Florida too dont forget. While it has been unseasonably cold its...
I did put a light in and covered them. They seem fine so far and its 42. They had been out all day and it was in the 50's to 60s. Not to mention I keep my house at 60-65 in the winter and they were in here with their light in those temps.
I moved my 5-6 week old quail to the outside pen. There are about 50 of them in a wire bottom pen with hay and light. They are feathered and I am hoping for good results. They were over running the brooders. We are only expecting to get in the 30s tonight. I am also going to cover them with...
MAN! I think my house is messier than that!!! I know we get a lot of people that request us to build them chicken mansions, then you tell them a price and they scatter. I love the idea of this coop but the ones we build are pleasing to our hens not to mention functional and easier on the pocket...

I am one of those animal loving crazy people. My husband and some friends decided to start processing quail. I tell you it took me about 10 or 15 in before I started processing myself. Really as adults they are very pretty and I do have a few female favorites that are great layers...

We got the reflective bubble wrap insulation from Pet's Mart. They use it to wrap the fish in for shipment. They were going to throw out a box of it so we asked if we could have it. They were plenty glad to give it away. It really holds the heat in on these plastic tubs. We also...
We love to back up to the feed mill door with our 1990 Volvo 240 Station wagon. You would be surprised what she can hold.
I read a little adult cat food was ok to grind to bring up the protein. Is that OK too for Corturnix?

Its not that hot of a bulb, temp inside middle of the brooder reads 96.2 (we keep our house cold) it was a quick picture before we changed them for the 10th time that day they are quite the poopers. The food is on the opposite side of the bulb. They drink great. I probably didn't...

Thank you. I love to learn! If I could make a career of being a college student even at my age I would! I dont mind research and asking for help especially when lives are involved. The only stupid question is the one NOT asked!!!
There is my new quote! Thirst for knowledge and...
We started with Paper towels after about 2 weeks we are now using Straw. Very inexpensive by the bale. Just keep it dry. You dont want any mold to grow in it.
Happy Yule little babies. I didn't even plan it. They were a day late! And with all the cold weather we have been having I wasn't sure how these eggs would be. BUT they are GREAT!
Now I cant wait for my eggs that a very nice BYC member sent me hatch!!
I think I need a better brooder...
I called a friend here that I normally deal with for quail. His wife might be interested in the pair in trade for Doe. I would have to get her a companion wether but that seems like a good option for us. I guess I did have sort of a Goat Mentor! AND I can see the kids and know they are going...

Yeah I have seen this with them. Spooky doesn't like humans and will follow Simon around anywhere. Simon is OK with us for the most part. I figure two does. Or just wether the boys to keep with her. I prefer to just start over though with a new pair of does.
I really only wanted a girl for milking. I am not sure about the eating of the goat. I really am not interested in a smelly buck, our neighbor has one and MAN does he smell. OK, so I again took something without researching it enough. I am from a huge city, and wasnt brought up doing this...
