We've been keeping ours in a metal mesh basket that fits in a plastic tote and another metal mesh basket zip tied on top so that they can't jump out. The poop and water goes through and collects in the bottom of the plastic tote. They still get dirty though. AND they use up water like crazy...

Oh, I almost forgot. My bantam chicks (and other chicks) like watermelon. I cut them a small hunk, rind and all. I score it a bit (at first) and sprinkle with a bit of their food to get them pecking at it. I think something fresh is beneficial to their health. Enzymes, carbs, vitamins etc.
I think that the world needs as much kindness as possible! It might be a good idea to call tsc corporate office and inform them of the situation. That might help counterbalance the effect of the "buy out" on unwell/improperly cared-for chicks. On their "books" it just looks like those bantams...
