This is the last surviving member of my original flock of 12 from 11 years ago when I first joined BYC. I’m posting today to say I’m back with a new flock of 12 chickies coming in a few weeks. It’s exciting to start again and hope my old girl will embrace her new flock. Like a grandmother I...
I have had 3 hawk strikes this year and lost 1 of my favorites. The other time it took weeks for one of my girls to recover and months later is still jumpy. Once a hawk almost came inside the coop but I was outside and scared it off. Now I have the run covered with deer netting. I only have 10...
I was speaking to a farmer in central NH today about this topic. He has had chickens for decades and uses no lights or water heaters. He says the first year pullets will lay eggs consistently through the winter irregardless of light and will slow down in the second winter. He uses a Fortex...
I put a couple of horse stall mats on my coop floor because they will last forever. Pricey though. Currently have wood chips but considering switching to sand.
You could start a new business quickly if you wanted to. Chicken keeping is a growing trend that you could take advantage of if you needed work or money. Or retire and start your own company. Nice job!
Just finished securing the pop door and then sanding down the indoor roosts and nest boxes so my little girls don't get splinters. Then we put them outside in their temporary run and I put a 10x10 tent over it because its hot and sunny. I also put a dish of cold water in there for them. Next up...
Thanks all! Now working on the run and securing the pop door to be raccoon-proof. If possible. I thought about rigging up my shotgun with a trigger line but thought it might be too dangerous. My wife is very protective of these chicks and is calculating overlapping fields of fire for rifles...
We just got back from TSC with a 10x10x6 dog kennel that I will be attaching to the side of the coop this afternoon. I also have a much larger run fenced in for when they get older and I know that the predator situation is under control. I have 4 Nite Gards coming Wednesday to do that.
They are still living inside in a brooder made out of 2 very large boxes taped together. About 2'x10'. I'm waiting for our 4 Nite Gards to arrive from Amazon on Wednesday before they go outside to the coop. We are both quite nervous about this huge move! And so are the chickies. We have 12 girls...
Do you folks leave your coop windows open in summer or close them for protection? I have 1/2" hardware cloth on the outside but am wondering it its safer to close the windows at night.
That was our original thought but now we're wondering if its better to leave them smooth side down so insects don't build nests under the mats. I found earwigs out there today. Once the girls are installed the bug situation will probably go away. And they are about 75 pounds each!!
Here is our 8x8 coop almost finished. Waiting for our 4 Night Gards to arrive next week before putting the 12 5 week old girls out there. We have raccoons so I put hardware cloth over the basement windows on hinges so I can put the glass in and out without losing protection. Lots of ventilation...
We are putting our 12 girls and 1 boy (named Lucky!) out in the new coop next week at 5 weeks old. Its an 8x8 coop with a 20x30 enclosed run. My question is should we put a feeder and waterer in the run as well as in the coop? They will have access to both through the pop door. These is our...
