Just an update for you all,
I decided against the necropsy after speaking with a pathologist at the state extension office; since I only have five other chickens, his point was that the worst case scenario is she had Mareks, and there's nothing I can do since the others have been exposed, and...
The deed's been done :(
When I came home tonight she was in visible pain. I'm going to call the state extension in the morning; it's in town, so I might be able to drop her off, and several people in my local forum have said it's not too expensive. Even though I'm fairly certain the causes are...
Thank you so much for all the helpful info, ChickensAreSweet and CMV.
Unfortunately, she's gotten much worse. I brought her inside Monday when I found the rooster standing on her and pecking at her neck; she could barely walk two steps. She's been inside in a box with food and booster-dosed...
Googling it up was pretty unhelpful. I tried searching the forums here before posting, and I read a lot of suggestions to USE polyvisol or a B vitamin mix, but no info on how much is too much...some said it's water soluble and can't be used too much, but is that also true of young chicks? I'm...
I posted over a month ago about one of my (now) 3-month-old polish/silkie mix chicks. She's been a little weaker than the other two since the beginning, but in December I noticed she was having difficulty standing, walking, and roosting. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with her legs...
Well, the poor thing died last night during the 2 hours I slept, so I guess it's immaterial. I'd still welcome any thoughts. At least I know in the future that these are serious symptoms to look out for. I guess this happens to most people when they're just starting out at some point, but it's...
My hen has been acting funny for about a week. I noticed that she seemed a little more lethargic than the other hens in the cold weather—she'll leave the coop, and peck the ground, but a lot of the time when she was standing she wouldn't hold her head upright; she let it settle on her shoulders...
Hello,
one of my chicks (named Creeper) has a leg problem. He's 6 weeks old now, and it's only been happening for 1 week. I've read online and in the forums hereit's not spraddle-leg, his toes seem to be fine, the legs aren't broken, and he doesn't seem paralyzed, so I don't think it's Mareks...
I appreciate your it's-alright-new-mommy-the-world-isn't-a-death-trap tone I'll let you all know how various disinfecting measures go over the weekend!
Update: Thank you all for the replies! I'm going to keep updating here, in case someone in the future has a similar problem The chicks are now 2 weeks oldI've named them Jeeper, Creeper, and Peeper. They've tripled in size, easilythe photo below is a week old, and they look significantly...
Well, next time I'll know to check my hens and really thoroughly clean out the coop when they start to get broody, so hopefully it won't happen again I need to find a way to lock the neighborhood birds away from their food, too, probably.
I'll try to post more pics! Bugs or not, they're super...
Thanks for your reply speckledhen!
What I ended up doing Friday night was going to Petsmart and getting the lice spray for parrots you told me about, and diluting it in hot water to bathe the chicks in. It seemed to help a little bit, and I pulled a lot of lice off by handthe chicks were super...
So, I decided to let my 3 broody silkies hatch some babies, but this morning, of the three that had hatched, one was dead with no injuries i could see and one was huddled in the corner all by herself, shiveringI don't know if she was chased away from the mamas or what, and I don't know what...

Hello,
I'm a total newbie at raising hens. A local chicken keeper gave me three black silkies at the beginning of December; they had been born in June or July and were all laying. Their first three days at my place they lay five eggs between them, and then nothing. I know there could be a couple...
