Setting eggs today 5-3-12...anyone with me?

I'm kind of with you. We have a broody hen and we set 10 eggs under her yesterday. She pushed 1 out, leaving us with 9. I'm hoping we have chicks in a few weeks because last year we built our own incubator and had 0 hatch :( Good luck on your hatch! Our eggs were bought from a local, family...

Broody hen, need some beginner help

Thanks! We bought and set 10 eggs under her and she pushed 1 out right away. So, as of right now today is day 2 and she has 9 eggs. We'll see what happens. Hopefully we have baby chicks in a few weeks.

Broody hen, need some beginner help

Well, I'm not quite sure yet. We are almost at coop capacity right now. So either my hubby builds another coop, which is unlikely, or we give all the chicks away, but keep 1 rooster. My parents have been talking about getting chickens, so this may be their push.

Broody hen, need some beginner help

Thanks! She is a Buff Orpington and pretty big. I am thinking I may go buy 6 eggs tomorrow. I have searched and I think I found most of the info that I need. Our coop has 5 hens with 3 nest boxes in the hen house. If she does hatch some chicks can I leave them in there with the other hens or do...

Broody hen, need some beginner help

We have 5 hens that are 13 months old. I am pretty sure 1 of them is broody. So, I need some basic beginner help. I would like to get some eggs to have her sit on and yes I know they should be fertile ;). How many should I get? Do I just slip them under her? Do I move her or leave her and then...

    Lxlzbacas Chicken Coop

The Cooperage So, I have been wanting chickens for a long time & we decided this was the year. We are landscaping our backyard this year, so we wanted something that we could incorporate into the landscaping. So my DH bought Building Chicken Coops for Dummies & got started. I have had my eye...

    How often to clean coop?

We use the deep litter method also and are just planning on doing our second round of cleaning. As of right now the plan is to completely remove the shavings, clean and replace them twice a year. So far it is working well for us.

    integration . . . new questions

Great thread, I am wondering the same thing. We have 5 hens that are about 6 months old and just got a bantum silkie. We put her in at night and in the morning they were fine until they cornered her and pecked at her. She went limp and my hubby thought she was dead so he went inside to get a...

    Introducing a new chicken

We bought a new hen on Sunday, but before we had it the lady didn't tell us that she was a bantum. We have 5 hens and they are now 6 months old. We put the new one in at night and in the morning they would go peck at her, leave her alone, then peck at her again. They ended up drawing blood so we...

    They aren't laying yet!

Here they are. We have 3 EEs, a buff Orpington and a Barred Rock. I think they are from the Barred Rock because the comb is the biggest and Reddest. The Buff Orpington has a comb also, but it is smaller and not as red. The EEs have nothing.

    They aren't laying yet!

We have eggs!!!!! I just went and cleaned the coop in preparation for the new hen and there were 3 eggs!!!! My daughter has been "checking" everyday, but missed them. They were inside a nest box and hidden if you were to just glance. I am soooooo excited!!! Wanna see a pic and take a guess who...

    They aren't laying yet!

Quote: Thanks! We are trying so hard to be patient. We have been wanting one more, a rooster. But I think I may buy a laying hen instead so I can get it out of my system.

    They aren't laying yet!

Quote: My hens have maybe a mediumish comb. They are not large, but are not small. I have to go check, but if I am not mistaken 2 of them don't have a comb.

    They aren't laying yet!

I know this is probably mentioned a dozen times a day, but I got my chicks the first week of March and they are still not laying. I've read the articles about this subject and their nutrition is good, they are healthy, etc. We have 3 EEs, a buff orpington and a barred rock. Any ideas???? What...

Who is still waiting for their first egg?

I'm still waiting. Mine are 21 weeks today and still nothing. We are getting really anxious. In fact I just finished sewing an egg tote to carry the eggs from the coop to the kitchen. My husband jokes that we have duds . What signs should I be looking for?

Any plans or a chicken coop for 3 chickens?

Quote: This is exactly what I was going to suggest. We built the all in one from the book, but I think the a frame would be relatively easy and suite your needs. I think the book estimates the cost of the a frame at around $200.
