Nice silver double laced pullet, the great leg colour may be noted aswell. We found that by breeding to silver pencilled wyandotte and rocks (either works) the sharp double lacing is present right away. However it then takes many more generations to breed out the red/brown leakage and the only...
Freeranging hen, your chicks are color base e-allele eb, when they have that dark blotch on their back of head neck area means eb. The e+ are like the chipmunk chicks ie brown leghorn, welsummers. They have the sharp defined cap on head and eye liners. The down color varies in both.
If those were my chicks, I would say 4 hens 2 roosters. This year we are hatching many more females than roosters for some reason. And that is from different combinations.

I run at 45 to 50 percent and keep the same at hatching, just because i use a cabinet and hatch in there also. So I set every week and hatch every week also. It works good for me and when fertile, they usually come pretty easy. Some nice hatching there for Thrisha, must be strong and healthy...
I just flew a quad of Bantam Barnevelders to a good friend in Toronto. (I live just 10 minutes south of Calgary) The pullets are laying well. I can give you his contact if you like. Just PM me.
Piet
That will really depend on where you live and the weather it is. Here in Alberta I could not do this, but on the west coast Vancouver you could do it. The humidistat at my folks house in Holland said 65% last week and that is normal there. Here were looking at 15 most the time.

Hi Andy,
To answer your question on speckles. This is something of preference. They hold egg shows also and judge on egg size, shape, color, gloss, egg shell quality etc. So the Barnevelder lays that very even colored glossy dark brown egg without speckles and the specialty clubs like to adhere...
No need to edit anything without a concrete answer. Again it is an assumption. We know for sure that the Langshan was the most infuential and those other breeds (were not real breeds yet then either) we are not 100% sure if they were used in the making. The Langshan for sure. We like to build on...
I wish you all the best with the improvement on egg color. You have your own interpretation as to what a Barnevelder was back then and what it should be today, but I applaud you anyway for supporting the Barnevelder all the way down in New Zealand. I mentioned before that the production of those...
Poultch, picking only the darkest eggs to hatch from is easy and my neigbour can do that for me also. But in order to breed to the standard, you have to know the standard and with some time and experience you learn what works and what not. That is much harder than selecting for egg color. You...
Poultch, that is not what I meant to say, I meant to say, that there is much more to breeding a Barnevelder than just selecting for egg color. That is the easy part.
The Barnevelder has a written standard that it needs to fit in order to be called a Barnevelder, egg color should not be...
Exactly!. Plus, for an exhibition breeder there is more than just 1 challenge that makes breeding interesting. When good production of good size dark eggs is established in your line, you look at further things to improve. Health, vigor and fertility are always priority and are things you...
Andy, I don't get overly exited about eggs, they all look the same to me, but if it makes you happy.
Sorry I cannot show a full basket, this is from the incubator and todays catch, everything freezes and cracks within hours. It sucks being where I am and I miss Holland a lot.
My Welsummers are...
Yes the bantam europa Champion was even a silver. There are rougly 300 breeders going on that variety now in Holland alone and sure someone (maybe yourself) will take that more into account. There is much work left with the large ones though. It only took you guys two years to get them in your...
Aha dann kannst du auch Deutsch mit mir reden. Ich komme aus die Niederlande nur 10 minuten uber die grenze. Die Deutsche machen ja alle mochliche farbenslagen!
Yes I know the standards vary, its too bad but it is what it is. Piet
You are an early bird or late? its 3:30 am in Germany!
Yes, but Marcel is not using them in his Dutch strain. They are just there, but do not come near the type they should be and would be disqualified at shows. Those German eggs are horrible and their Welsummers are quite different from the Dutch ones in type and color, I believe they are...
Geelwitdubbelgezoomd is not what I thought Redcap meant. You see all these jubilee orpingtons now and that color is what I had in mind. The geelwitdubbelgezoomd has been around forever yes.
