Lost and Found City Chicks - to keep or not to keep

The homeowner is still looking for the chicken owners. So far no luck. No the country home isn't out of the question. She has just said that if I wanted them I could have them. I don't think the rooster will be able to stay, simply because, at least so far, we have not found a rooster that got...

Lost and Found City Chicks - to keep or not to keep

This morning my girlfriend called from the country to tell me (a reluctant suburbanite) that her cousin awoke yesterday (city-dweller) to 3 chickens in her backyard. The woman had asked around and couldn't find where they came from. She was wanting my girlfriend to come take them to her farm...

    Lost and Found City Chicks

Thanks. I was thinking the one looked a bit "roo-ish" :). And maybe that is why the owner could not be found. I am able to keep a roo. but so far have not found one that works well with my children. Can you tell me what you would do for quarantine? I have a large dog carrier that would...

To keep or not to keep

and then.... today we have our first temperature drop, a whopping 20'F lower and would you believe I got 4 eggs. I'm scratching my head here. :) Just for clarification, I stopped letting them out of their yard 6 weeks ago, with three exceptions. Each exception I skipped morning feeding in...

To keep or not to keep

I know a lot of people ask about why they might not be getting eggs. In general I think I understand this, but I'm struggling a bit with the bigger picture.</p> Early this summer I had a flock that I loved. They seemed perfect. 6 of them were 1 year old and great layers with an exception of a...

I'm assuming foxes, but I'm confused.

oh I bet. I just have a tiny little space. and one little dog who thinks she's in charge of that space. But she is not so helpful at night when she's curled up in her little bed.

fabulous. Every flock of chickens needs a good dog. :)

I'm assuming foxes, but I'm confused.

Well, they've been casing the joint for 3 years. This is the first time they got any though. I was stupid and simply forgot to latch the door. I basically laid out breakfast for them. I was just trying to understand the return. My next door neighbor/mil had a head in her yard but not until...

No. Perfect. I was suspecting a red fox. Possibly more than one? I was just surprised that we found 3 small bodies in neighbors yards today (36 hours later). And that heads and a wing were brought back.

I'm assuming foxes, but I'm confused.

We had a coop door malfunction two nights ago and awoke to dead chickens all over our backyard. We live in the suburbs. We had 6 layers (one year old) and 5 pullets (16 weeks old). I'm assuming foxes as we've seen foxes around and they are not shy. I actually tried looking for this in previous...

    Chick Feed

The reason that I even included "organic" is that I was trying to specify that it is not a factory made feed and not sold in feed stores. It is locally mixed. I appreciate the info regarding calcium. That was very helpful. I've contacted the woman I purchase from to ask more info about the feed.

    Chick Feed

I'm hoping one of you wonderful people can help me with this. I have 8 week old chicks and 6 week old chicks (3 and 2 respectively). I feed my birds (I also have 6 year old layers) a ground non-soy, non-corn organic mix that I purchase. I accidently ordered too little chick starter (okay, I...

    Bald-headed Polish Rooster

Really? Sigh... I was hoping maybe only two weeks at most. Good to have a better idea. Hmmm... Well, dh is willing to help. He's the one who was doing the salve for me. He just only thinks of it when I ask him. I'm thinking that as long as the birds are out they don't seem to bother him. And...

    Bald-headed Polish Rooster

So, because I'm due any day to have a baby..... any idea how long I might need to separate him?

    Bald-headed Polish Rooster

Because the damage seems to mostly happen early in the morning... can I separate him out at night for a few days? Maybe a kennel inside the coop or something? The salve I have was working but we need to do it daily; I was away and dh forgot. But I believe it was still working. Any guess at all...

    Bald-headed Polish Rooster

I posted this in Chicken Behaviours and Egg Laying, but I'm not sure that's the right place. So I'm re-posting here. I have a small flock of chickens about 10 months old. I got the hens together as chicks, there are 6. Then someone I knew couldn't keep the Polish Roo and I took him in. When he...

    Polish Rooster's Head Feathers

I have a small flock of chickens about 10 months old. I got the hens together as chicks, there are 6. Then someone I knew couldn't keep the Polish Roo and I took him in. When he showed up he had a huge bald spot with just a ring of feathers. Apparently, his former flock-mates would not let his...

    Another possible molting question

Thank you for this. We do have quite a few feathers lying around now. And I can see where the two that were earlier are starting to get neck feathers back.
