    eating leghorns

I have an 11 old Leghorn boy who's morning wake up calls are bound to cause problems with the neighbours anytime soon. If I can't find him a home soon he'll have to go for the chop but I'm wondering if he's worth eating. Is there ever enough meat on a leghorn to make it worth the effort...

    Coup floor design

Yeah, that would make sense. How much space do they need in a coup other than the nesting boxes and perches?

    Coup floor design

I would like to build a grate or mesh floor into my new coup so that the poo will fall through. The new coup will be kept on our allotment with our largest hens, and therefore easy maintenance is very important (they are messy bu**ers!). I don't want to use weld mesh or wire as a floor coz I'd...

Fresh blood on Poop of 5wk old Chick

I had 6/7 week old chicks that arrived and presented with the same symptom. They seemed healthy but there was fresh (bright red) blood in some of their poos. We treated them with coxoid and they made a good recovery. Apparently Baycox is better, but you can only get that from the vet. As...

    feather tumour?

My two year old pekin had developed a lump of compacted feathers near her preen gland. It looks like it's growing out of a feather folicle which had stretched. Can anyone tell me what's going on and how to treat her? Thankyou!

    Newbie problem! URGENT!!!

As other people have suggested, they are probably cold and probably have coccidiosis, in which case you really must treat them with the proper medication as soon as possible, it's a very debilitating infection and may weaken them for the rest of their lives.

    Bloody Poop

Could be coccidiosis. I've read (done a lot of reading on the subject recently as we've second lot of new chickens arrive with it!), that when you stop medicated feed and change to layers, the birds can become infected with cocci. Most medicated feed only reduces the numbers of cocci, so that...

    ? blood in poo

I've just found out that my girls had some "blood" in their poo before we got them (three weeks ago). Not sure if that changes anything. I've asked the person we got then from to check on the health of the other birds raised at the same time. Will let you know what happens......

    Pictures of chicken poo

Does anyone know where I can find pictures of healthy and unhealthy chicken poo? I would particularly like to see pictures of the poo of birds with worms, coccidiosis and ones that contain normal poo with intestinal slough in. If anyone has any or can direct me to some I will love them forever...

    ? blood in poo

Thanks, I will follow your advice, remove the wormer and wait for a bit. Does anyone know where I can find pictures of poo that contains bits of intestine that come away naturally? At this rate I'm gonna end up being a world authority on chicken poo!!

    ? blood in poo

The active ingredient is flubendazole. In a desparate atempt to find an answer we attempted an autopsy on our dead pekin. We've never done this before but I used to work in a histology lab and am familiar with human organs. We managed to identify (with the help of a diagram) the major organs...

    ? blood in poo

Unfortunaley Lily died sometime last night. My two year old son keeps asking if he can have her back now I'm now in panic mode over our two twelve week old RIRxLS. They are showing what might be clotted blood bits in their poo. They seem very healthy and were treated with coxoid when we...

    ? blood in poo

Thanks, I think you're right. I've started my other birds on the new wormer, they aren't showing any problems yet, but they are bigger to start with. I've always followed and kept up to date with the instructions on the wormer I had. I really hate the thought that I could have done something...

    ? blood in poo

Thanks for your support! She turned down scrambled egg this morning (very unususal for her). She had some yogurt a couple of days ago, although I don't think she had much. She usually has organic growers pellets, and a few days ago I added some chick crumb thinking the extra protein may help...

    ? blood in poo

She's much worse. She just keeps falling asleep with her feathers fluffed up. She's lost weight and feels like a bag of bones, she's always been very bony, but she's the only young pekin we've got so I've nothing to compare with. Her breathing seems fine, no snot or anything. I can't find...

    ? blood in poo

I bought some flubenvet (sp?), that's all they had at the shop. Trouble is she doesn't want to eat anything. I've put some sugar in her water in the hope it'll give her enough energy to eat. I'm sure we're going to lose her. It's so frustrating when I don't know what to do. How can I tell if...

    ? blood in poo

We use verm-x. Someone suggested that it only reduces the number of worms, so I emailed the company who said that you can use it at double the dose for a case of known worms, so I did that about three weeks ago. It says that it does all internal worms. I will try a different wormer, incase...

    ? blood in poo

I've got an 18 week old pekin who is the last of three hens we had about 12 weeks ago who had what we think was coccidiosis about three days after we had them. We treated them with coxoid and all three recovered really well. About five weeks ago one of the hens (a LS) suddenly became very ill...

    poo problems!

My fifteen week old light sussex roo has been passing dark green poos with lots of (?) water. I thought it might be worms (they free range around the garden lots). I have just given all the birds a double dose of verm-x (on the advice of the verm-x people), but is there anything else I should...
