I noticed a lot of people post looking for meat birds other than X Rocks. A lot of people recommend Freedom Rangers. I have not found any good info explaining what the Freedom Ranger is a cross of. And will they grow too big to breed like the X Rocks. Any good links or info would be great.
If you are talking about the cornish game hens you get at the grocery store. Those are 4 to 5 week old cornish rock cross hens. same birds just younger hens. At least thats what I have read and been told. Hope this helped.
I had some X Rock hens and I crossed them with a Dark Cornish cock. My cock X Rock got too big and could not mount the hens So I tried the Dark Cornish male. I got a whole bunch of different combos from these birds. The one cock and three hens produced birds of all kinds of shapes and colors...
I raised Dark Cornish for two years and they were great birds. The hens get very broody and liked being in there coop. They grew about equal to the other birds I raised with them including RIR,Orpingtons,Barred Rocks. The Dark Cornish cocks are very beautiful and the hens are not bad looking...
I got a Purdue chick that was left behind on a truck. Some how it was overlooked and the truck was in for repair at a friends shop. He called me and I got it. I raised it with all my other birds. I kept him for aprox 14 months, not weeks, months. He weighed 24 pounds and was huge. I had to kill...
I want to free range some X Rocks for meat. Reading on line alot of people say they have trouble with them and they prefer birds like the Freedom Ranger and others. Being the X Rock was designed for commercial chicken houses are they capable of forraging for food to keep my feed cost down? I...
Thanks for the inputs. I feed them medicated start and grow. I gave the last two BR some med. the feed store had for poultry with colds. They seem to still be kicking.Been a few days and seem ok. Hope thats the only loss of this bunch.
I have some Barred Rocks,Rhode Island Reds,Dark Cornish and Buff Orpingtons all hatched out together. I have had them all together for about 5 weeks now. They all got their feathers and I took them out of the brooder and put them in the coop. Still had access to light for warmth at night.I let...
DH and I were at auction last night and saw a chicken we've never seen before. The auctioneer called it a "California", but we Googled it and came up with nothing. The distinct feature about these chickens is their faces have the same look (coloring, with the white patches around the eyes) as...
We have a bantam frizzle cochin who is now smelling strange. It's a bitter, sort of sour smell, and it seems to be coming from all over him, not his vent area. He seems normal otherwise -- eating, drinking, pooping, no drainage or eye issues, no sneezing. We have smelled this odor before when...
The eggs are white and they are bantam.
As far as the term blue splash, I am just getting into the color thing, so I'm not real sure of the difference, but my understanding is that blues are all over blue while blue splashes have blue in them as well as other colors. But don't quote me on it!
I bought some fertilized eggs today and they are labeled as "Blue Splash". They are bantam eggs. I know that blue splash is a color, not a breed, but is there a breed that it might likely be because of just putting the label "Blue Splash"?
Thanks,
Karen & Tim
Right now they are in the incubator, but I just put them in an hour ago or so. So if I take them out now, I can still eat them. If I wait, then I can't. I thought I might leave them in until I can candle them and see what happens.
Thanks for the tip about the bacteria possibly messing up...
I know you're not supposed to wash hatching eggs -- I've read that in several different places. But I've also read not to put "poopy" or dirty eggs in the incubator also. It rained all day yesterday and is very muddy outside, so all of the eggs I collected this morning (intending to put them...
We have 4 friendly pygmy goats that I will be willing to sell cheap, but only if they are going to be pets with kids to play with them. I have one billy and three nanny goats. I don't have a lot of time to spend with them and my kids aren't as interested in them as they were. You can email me...
