One of my Plymouth rock hens who is just over a year old has a swollen toe. The swelled area is near the base of the underside of her middle toe on her left foot. I noticed it yesterday because her left foot was sticking out a little too far like it was painful to stand on. She was also shaking...
I have what I thought was 12 standard-sized Plymouth rocks from Ideal Poultry which I received back in February, but they aren't even as tall as my knee yet. Are they bantams or do chickens just take longer than 10 months to reach full size?
My hens' birthday is coming up in February and I wanted to do something special for them like making some sort of treat.
I was wondering if you have any suggestions or treats you give your chickens on special occasions.
Recently my hens' egg production is slowing down drastically.
I have 12 plymouth rocks and I used to get about ten eggs a day. Now I'm lucky if I get half that much.
I have a 95 watt light set up to go from 1 AM to 8 AM. The sun rises around 7:30 and sets around 5:30 which is almost 16 hours...
We caught one big rat in a trap earlier today since we know we have them and want to get rid of them. My questions are:
How do you know when you've gotten rid of all the rats?
About how many are there living together?
How long wil it take to get rid of them?
Today I was outside with my chickens when i looked over and saw a ran run under the coop. I've only seen one but there is probably more.
What can I do?
Earlier today I picked up one of my chickens, Penguin, and noticed blood was coming out from underneath the middle toe nail on her left foot. Why/how did this happen and is there anything I can do to fix it? She doesn't seem to be in pain but I'm afraid it may get worse or infected. Please help.
I unfortunately don't have pictures, (I've only been doing it when the little brothers aren't around because I don't want them messing everything up.) but I just wanted to let you all know that with the right motivators you can teach chickens simple tricks. I've been teaching Comet, Penguin...
This here is Jumper taking a dust bath with a few friends. She is actually my neighbor's special chicken but I take care of her.
Here is the girls still taking a dust bath. From left to right, it's Alaska, Airborne, Penguin, and Comet who seconds after the picture was taken blocks the view of...
To play, you copy whatever the person above you posted and give one point to one breed and take a point from another. Once any certain breed hits 0, it is out for good. Whichever breed stays in longest wins. Please do not post twice in a row or add more breeds to the list.

Has anyone made or purchased a leash or harness for your chickens?
If so where did you buy it or how did you make it?
I'm just wondering because I'd like to have a way to let them out of the run into the grassy area outside the yard and be able to take them back in without chasing them 5 times...
My dad and I disagree over whether or not, one of our barred rocks, Epic is a cockerel or a pullet. When this pictures was taken Epic was more than seven weeks old and less than 11 weeks old.
Hopefully I posted the pictures right. If not I'll try again.
(If anyone wants to see a picture one...
So I'm going to be so gracious as to fulfill your wishes. (There's a possibility I messed up while uploading the pictures and if I did, I'm sorry for disappointing all of you cause you must be dying to see my lil girls.) However, before I actually show you the pictures there are a couple things...
I've looked on several different sites and most of them said kale was good to feed chickens. Then i was looking at a site that said it either was or could be toxic. Which of the websites is correct?
