Advice welcome - injures quail - innards came out a bit

Hi all - I’ve kept quail before and have not ever had this happen before. This evening we were holding one of our 7 week old quail. (She started laying 3 days ago) she had something stuck to her foot so we wanted to wash it off. She’s generally pretty calm and quite tame. She will dit on our...

Guinea hen setting on nest should i let her?

I say yes! I think if the instinct is there go with it. HOWEVER: be prepared to take care of the chicks either with mom or by yourself after they hatch. Guineas are not known to be good mothers.

Why are Guinea shells so hard?

Quote: So if you drop them it doesn't break the shell and also doesn't kill the embryo? YES .. guinea eggs are amazingly hardy! I have heard that the egg shells are so hard because the moms are not very careful with them. I could attest to this as I have noticed that my chickens are much...

Phesants: Do they HAVE to have a cage? What are the oods..

Do they HAVE to have a cage? What are the odds pheasants sticking around if I raise them and leave them outside without a closed coop? Like pea fowl...?? Are they noisy? Do they eat your plants (compared to chickens? Compared to guinea?) Thank you.

Um, I'm thinking I'd rather have the ticks...

I baught my first keets last year. We have a flock of six, three girls three boys. They are moderately noisy. If your keeping guineas for tick control, and are having noise problems ... start by down sizing the whole flock and GET RID of the GIRLS. The girls are the ones that makes the most of...

Do pullets and cockerels estabish dominance the same way?

I have 5 chicks brooding in a large horse trough. Have had lots of chicks before, but last year... seems a long time ago. They are ~10 days old. Three out of five seems to display what looks to me like rooster behavior, jumping, pumping wings and jousting at each other. Could these be roosters...

Thinking about amputating chicks leg... yes or no...

Thank you all. I think for now the chick will live. This is a dual purpose chicken, may turn broiler instead of egg layer. He/she is the biggest of the chicks that hatched last week. So far he seems to grow well and get around well without any assistance. Will revisit the issue again if she...

Thinking about amputating chicks leg... yes or no...

Hello All, My chicks hatched last week. (My 2 year old played with the thermostat on the incubator one day when I was at school and I only got 5 chicks out of 40 to hatch. Four of them are VERY healthy. One has a hurt leg.. His hurt leg looks just like the one in this post from a couple years...

My chickens only want to free range about 2 hours

How old are these girls? Its pretty normal for the young ones to retire to rest. If weather is harsh all the bird will go in after a couple hours.

Trouble re-integrating my 1st broody back in..

I would try moving your other chickens out for the day, leaving the broody hen in the area you want her to reintegrate into. If you have nowhere to put the other chickens try just a couple hours, otherwise longer is better. Chickens are much less vulnerable when they are in there home area, you...

    crowing at all hours

I had 4 little bantam roosters last year, they preferred to roost in the trees instead of the co-op and it seemed like they were standing guard. Every time there was noise, or a car showed up one of them would crow a couple times. Fortunately for me sound doesn't travel well into our house.

Does it matter what you make a nest box out of ?

Buckets are good, so are planters, I have one hen that will only lay if I give her a cardboard box.

Really COOL Picture of YOLK stages during formation

Yeah, I had read about the egg assembly process in a book when I was a kid. Totally different to see it in real life though. The one thing that surprised me was how many really small yolks were already being prepared. There were already enough little yolks growing to lay over a whole month!

Hens will not come out of coop

Perhaps if there was a place the new girls could 'hide' outside it would ease the transition. Is there a roost they can go up on outside?

Why Aren't My Chickens Laying? Here Are Your Answers!

I have kept chickens for most of my life. Last year I got 20+ chicks in the early spring, NONE started laying until this Jan! They were 7-11 months when they started. I had all the regular stuff, same as past years, these girls wern't interested. What did it? A friend had a crab broil, I...

Really COOL Picture of YOLK stages during formation

I had a laying hen than had to go... It made me sad to cull a chicken that was laying, on the positive side, I got to see, for the first time the assembly line of yolks and forming egg that were being prepared inside the hen! Seeing it in real life was fascinating! The first (largest yolk...
