If you live in a city or suburb, feral cats need to be added to the predator list. They are also smart and will come back to pick the chickens off 1 by 1!
Have a polish hen, about 2 years old, that just started tucking her hen between her legs & then tumbling over. She gets back up and at times seems fine. Other times rubbing head on ground or holding neck in a 'J' shape.
Everyone else is acting normally. Any ideas?
I inherited 2 Bantam silkie hens this winter. Any tips for helping them survive the coming summer heat? I have lost 2 cochin hens in the past during the summer. The hens now live in a dog run located under a tree, with shade under their house, and a shade cloth covering half the enclosure. I...
A friend of mine has a problem with her hens.
What would cause hens to loose their feathers around their vents? This is only happening to the Barred Rock hens. They had some build up of fecal material and now have lost the feathers around their vents.
I have lost bantam hens to feral cats. Have been told that full size hens can hold their own to a cat. But he feral cats that I have trapped have been pretty scary!
If it is a domestic cat I would think you could teach to live in harmony with full size hens.
If you have feral cats in the area...
If they are indoor I have used newspaper
For my hens /pullets outside i use cedar chip in their sleeping area. Read/heard somewhere it helps keep insects away
Since it is the only one you will be moving out, I would think you should try to wait until it is about the same size as the others. I kept my young chicks next to the full grown hens in a different enclosure so they saw each other. Also how cold is it where you are?
Is she free range at all? Could she be hiding her eggs somewhere? Or worse yet could something be eating them? Usually when my Easter Egger skips a day or 2 I'll get 2 in one day.
I had a 'mutt' neutered male cat that was a great mouser. Think it is an individual trait that some cats have and others don't. Good luck finding a mouser tht does not 'turn' on your chickens/baby chicks.
I have also heard of the bloom that helps protect the eggs contents. I rarely wash an egg unless it is really dirty. Then I'll wash it, cook, & eat that one right away.
The only thing that has kept out the cats in my area was been chain link fencing on the sides and wire fencing on top of the enclosure. Then I enclosed it with bird netting. Otherwise the babies could slip thru/or get pulled thru the chain link. We lost 3 hens to cats a couple years ago, the cat...
Looks like a Sharp shinned or Coopers hawk. Most of the hawks we see in AZ are Red tail hawk (this does not look like one). Looks like the same type of hawk that took down a pigeon in my yard this spring. Glad to here your girls are safe!
