I had a limping hen all of a sudden one day... as all the hens free-ranged every afternoon, "Limping Leah" limped far behind the other...many days I carried her to the flock.. One day weeks later, I noticed, that I no longer had a limping hen...I really think she sprained it.
Good luck.
I am so sorry...this is exactly what I found last week at this time. Dawg on the forum, said it may be worms, so I went to farm store and got Wazine 17 wormer and wormer paste for horses (IVERMECTIN paste 1.87) and gave each hen a pea sized dose of the paste soaked on a cube of bread. I took one...
From what I am reading, there are two different sicknesses here...Poppy Butt and Droopy Butt! My sick hen has had both for a week.
Dawg53's advice has pulled my sick hen thru so far..
It was last week at this time that i discovered one very sick hen with a poppy butt and not walking very...
CPrendie, You are describing what I have seen too in my very sick bird...After reading the internet all weekend, I think it is tape worms...I have just come home from the feed store with WAZINE 17, to mix in the waterer (I have only 10 hens) I am waiting for someone to tell what the ratio of mix...
Oh,Flock Master would you help me? I have spent days reading and can't seem to know what I am doing. I have one very sick hen with Poppy butt and is very slow and sleepy and breathing with beak open...I have her in my garage and keep checking her... I used the chick water antibiotic to get thru...
I bought a ziplock of bag of FOOD GRADE DE from my feed store...I just realized, I don't know how to use it?
Am I right to "SIFT" it in the nesting boxes and coop floor and dirt floor run and the free-range dirt bath areas?
AND I sprinkle it in their food too ?
I have goggled and read BYC alllll weekend...All signs point to a sick hen having worms... My 2 yr old RIR has had poppy butt for a week...it has looked like she has a egg stuck in her vent as that area is poked out and red... I have bathed that area and she seems to like being bathed...Her poop...

Last year, the above story of taking a puppy into a feed store, that had ALREADY had its parvo shots, happened to my son & his new import puppy. We had imported the GS puppy in from Germany/Italy. The puppy came healthy to us withAKC papers, import papers, dog passports, etc. The puppy barely...
I'm always ready & waiting for new technology ... I have wanted so many times to ask BYC a quick question or post a quick photo of my hens, but found BYC facebook easier and quicker to use. I can't wait to try using your new program Thanks!!!!
My 'baker's dozen' of LAND RUN Hens & I THANK...
I like the 'nuking' idea...and I was also laying them out to dry out...OK! ...then my GIRLS will still be getting their eggs shell 'chips'!
I think their eggs have grown from small to large because of feeding them their own egg shells...they dont seem to have much to do with the oyster shell...
The guy is an idiot! YOUR eggs are the GOLDEN eggs! The store eggs may be from gross conditions! Tell him that some people are buying OUR eggs for $7 a dozen!
Question...I have broken up the egg shells in scrambled eggs for my 13 laying hens...yes, they ate them all up...no problems...but I read here on the forum that I am to bake my eggs shells in a 400 degree oven before feeding them crushed up to my hens...? Is that correct? Do I have to bake them...
My RIR has layed a soft or weak shell this EVENING!!! All 13 hens have been laying perfect shelled eggs for 6 weeks and tonight (which is also strange) one hen layed a soft shelled egg in the run!
And I always have oyster shell out for them...? Help....
