    Surprise Roo

I have three roosters that are 10 months old and are separate and free ranging from my hens. Back in august we had ordered 4 more chickens and though we had ordered hens we were concerned that one of the JG was a roo. This was confirmed Yesterday when I opened up an egg that had been hidden in...

Which breed of chicken is at the top of your flock (pecking order)

Top of my flock is my 12lb B Jersey Giant Olga, she beats the stuffing out of my 10lb BO roo Judges and 13lb B Jersey Giant roo Magristrate. Bottom are my BLRWs Red and Blue (my 3 yr old named them).

Old wives tales about guineas and coops

Mine roost on my chicken coop every night and have for 4 years. They never go farther than my neighbors yard and except for a baby being lost to a hawk ever year we don't have predation issues. We have 7 of the original 10 left. They also have a feeder and water under the raised coop. I think...

    Most Friendly Breed?

My Doms are b y far the friendliest in the sense of petting and climbing on me. The BJGs are the most talkative and my BOs are just sweet. My three BO roosters are the nicest roosters you could ever meet, they follow me around as much as our dogs. My BJG rooster not so much...

Getting 4 new hens! Help choosing breeds!

The Doms are very similar to BR's in color and shape. I think the colors on the Doms look a little crisper, but that's just me. All three of my Doms were loves from the start and easily learned to jump up on my arm and thigh when I patted them.

Getting 4 new hens! Help choosing breeds!

I have BJG's, BRLW, Ops and Dominiques. They hold up very well in our tempetous rainy cold climate. As for personalities my BRL Wynattoes are very personal and quirky. My Ops are a little bit more standoffish, but sweet. The Black Jerseys are my largest and I think prettiest. They are the least...

    *SO not cool!!*

All 15 of my hens were doing this also. So, My husband got the clever idea of moving their nesting boxes above eye level. My hens stoppped immediately. When they couldn't see them, they didn't eat them.

    Nor'easter season

I live in the peninsula of NJ (southern Jersey). It Nor'easters here for 6 months, snows for 3 and then 3 months of 90% humidity 100 degree days. In the last 2 weeks we have gone from 90 degree sunny days to 60 degrees and raining. The temp will drop dramatically like that for the next month...

    Roo turkey guard?

We have 3 BO roosters that were accidental purchases, as we currently have a Black Jersey Giant as the head roo. When they hit about 3 months they started fighting and were placed in a bachelor pen away from the rest of the chickens. They escaped do to some neighbors kids a few weeks later...

Breed recommendations for my future flock?

I have three breeds together, Buff Orps, Black Jersey Giants and Dominiques. All are super friendly, with the Doms by far the nicest and the Black Jerseys the prettiest. All three breeds are great first time heritage dual purpose chickens.

    Cornish X

I have had chickens for 5 years and in a recent order this spring I accidentally received three of these. It was awful! I felt so bad for them. They could hardly carry themselves around and sat in their own poop all day because they were to heavy to get up. They also ate 4 times as much as my...

Young children with roosters...is it a good idea?

This is a tough question. I am a large believer that children should be taught very young that the chickens are not playthings. You can't teach a rooster not to go on instinct but you can teach a child even if if they are very young. I personally have 3 rooster, 2 Buff Orps and a Black Jersey...
