Thanks for all the info! You guys rock.
He has black skin and 4 toes. I don't know the difference in combs. He looks a lot like the silkies in these pictures. That was all I had to go on. My son loves him and he'll be a wonderful pet...
We just got this sweet boy today, I'm guessing he's a couple of years old from his spurs. Someone told me he cannot be a silkie because of his comb, but the guy I got him from thinks he is. His skin is black and he has leg feathers, but they are in rough shape. He wasn't in the best...
I have mine on timed lights, too. With 19 hens I'm getting about 14 eggs a day, give or take a couple.
I wish I had a video of them the morning after it snowed. We just got enough to cover the ground, but when I opened the run and they flocked to get out, there was a pile up in the doorway...
I didn't know that the cold weather could push them into becoming broody!!! I'll have to keep an eye on mine. They did not want to go out on the frozen snowy ground this morning, but they were all out by early afternoon.
Oh, and my kids have a playstation but I still make them go outside.
Rural King has them, if you have one close by. I think they sell them as horse bedding. :) I don't know about Lowes....make sure they are treated if you get them there!!
Golden Comets (or Red Sex Link) can be a cross of Rhode Island Red and Rhode Island White birds or Rhode Island rooster and a White Plymouth Rock hen and there may be other combinations. The adult hens are cinnamon/reddish/buff with lighter markings and the roos are white with some red...
Thanks, nurse_turtle. I had told my husband I thought that it was best to euthanize, but I wanted someone else to say that. I've been supplementing her laying feed with hard boiled mashed eggs and yogurt, and have not had time to get to the farm store for oyster shell, but honestly it's a lot...
Hi, I have a Black Star Hen, Mi'Lady, who is an older chicken. I don't know how old because the man I bought her from lied to me...but that's a different story!! 3 days ago, my son and I noticed her flopping around and unable to stand. When we picked her up and examined the leg it was clearly...
I live near Owensboro and we haven't had rain for soooo long. Wish we could have some of yours. The ground it too hard to dig potatoes...not that they could grow in that cement anyway. Dusty and dry.
Can someone tell me when and where the flea market is in Leitchfield, please? Also, if you go, do they typically have a lot of vendors and variety of animals?
Thank you, he is very pretty and good natured. He is definitely NOT a broiler. Goldie is 24 weeks old and the RIR roosters who are the same age are quite a bit larger than he is. I believe he is a red sex link.

We agree!! One of the RIR roos is going in the morning. Cannot tolerate that bully another day (he even got after me). But "Goldie" is a sweet heart.....so far. Not sure his name fits now that he has grown into a roo, though. LOL

Hmmmm...well he is actually quite a bit smaller (both shorter and lighter weight) than the RIR roosters that are the same age [6 months]. He's no Sasquatch by any means. LOL
