Hi All
Wow 16 or 17 that's amazing. My country vet's standard answer to that question is "till the dawgs git 'em" which as long as you can forgive his special sense of humor is kind of accurate because that usually is the cause of most chickens' demise.
I had a very cool little girl who lived...
I too let my chickens range free during the day and then lock them up at night. For babies I keep them confined in a small area until they get to be too big to look like snackfood for our cats and until they stop making their baby peeping noises. This is definitely a month to 8 weeks depending...
Oh please do not harm the cats! You can get help from Alley Cat Allies (http://www.alleycat.org/ Phone: 240-482-1980). They have a complete plan for helping out in situations just like yours. And if you just remove them then others will move in - they can be trapped and managed and everyone can...
Hey Smith2
I'm a teacher with chickens too and everone at my school who knows me knows it. Don't let them make fun of you! Most teachers don't have anything nearly as interesting as chickens in their lives! If they are making fun of you they are just jealous that you have such cool and unique pets.
I had a wonderful hen who lived with me for 8 years. She would come when she was called and jump up in the air to grab grapes. She lived in a house just inside our back door and came in thru the kitty door every night to go to bed.
She was the inspiration for my first business name -...
Dear augiedranch
One thing you have to expect in life is that opinions are like noses - everyone has one (OK so I cleaned this up for PG audiences). Your roo can and very likely will live a relatively long and happy life. He is unfortunately more likely to be eaten by the neighbor's dog than he...
I have a Maine Coon type - got him as a young stray so don't know what his real breeding is (or exactly how old he is now) but he totally looks and acts like a purebred. He is 23+ pounds and the sweetest guy ever.
We are in Florida so he gets a lion cut every 3 months since his hair matts so...
WooHoo!! Thank you PeepsandBunnies!!
My poor lonely Silkie roo now has a new girlfriend thanks to PeepsandBunnies' generosity. A lovely buff lady has joined our family. She will take a few days to get oriented and talk to Fluffy thru the cage and then he will get to meet his new lady.

The little brown one looks like a Wellsouth (I think that's the name) - anyway they are usually referred to as Dutch or Holland chicks. Someone in another of the forum topics referred to them as looking like "chipmunks" because of the stripes I guess.
I have had several and they are really...
I've thought about getting eggs but:
How long can you keep eggs before you start to incubate them and at what temp do they need to be stored until then?
Wow is that hatchery a normal one? Do all the chickens in these hatcheries have such dismal existences? Drawers of baby chicks - and stacks of laying hens? Those were some really sad photos.
Without a doubt when money and animals are involved together the animals always suffer. I don't think...
I will be in Sarasota over this weekend (May 17-18) and was wondering if anyone close to there had any bantam hens for sale. Am really looking for a Silkie hen but at this point would be happy with any small sweet ones. Would like 2 or 3.
Would need to be close access to I-75 as I will be...
Would be wonderful if the admins here or someone who is really good with databases could set up an EBAY like rating system. Something short sweet and to the point so that it was easy to search.
So sorry to hear your babies are sick. By the way the chipmunk-looking ones are probably Dutch/Holland ones (Willsouth or something like that).
I don't see them very often but the hens grow up to be pretty with gold-ish black-laced feathers and the roos are gorgeous with green-gold feathers...
Don't know how well known this is but please do NOT use AMDRO or most of the fire ant killers that are on the market. They are DEADLY to all birds and therefore chickens. The warning about deadly to birds is in VERY small print on the containers so it's easy to miss.
Once they eat even a little...
If I were you and it's at all possible I would bring her into your house and put her in a secure cage with water and a little bit of her food and keep her very warm - at least 95F.
Chickens are such resilient little critters and keeping a hurt/sick one very warm will go a long way to helping...
I am located in SE Florida and am trying to find a few small bantam (preferably Silkie!) hens. I have 3 roosters and only one poor silkie-cross hen who is getting really tired. My silkie rooster lost his hen and he is very depressed. I've called the rescue places and noone seems to have any...
