I have an americauna (who I guess to be at about 13 weeks old). I don't know if it is a pullet or cockerel...thinking pullet at this point if it even matters. She appeared perfectly healthy before I added her to my laying flock (had her quarantined for 2 months) and after her first night in the...
http://www.allbirdproducts.com/newproductpages/avian_insect_liquidator.html ...just wondering if you can eat eggs after applying...or should this only be put on birds you don't plan on eating eggs from...
About a month ago I was not getting any eggs from my 15+ layers (they had stopped laying in sept). So I put a light in the coop (regular 60 w bulb) and set it to stay on until 10 pm. I then increased their feed a bit (basically free choice layer pellet), they were already getting alot but just...
Are mites white? I saw something on my chickens that look exactly like the dark mites but they are white. Or am I looking at lice? I noticed something odd about my chickens as well...their feathers look encapsulated at the bottom like this picture
I dewormed one of my bantams the other day with an ivermectin pour on. Now I see around his face he is losing feathers and the area looks kinda of scaley (this is no where I applied the pour on fyi). So could this be a reaction or something else? Nobody else is having any feather loss issues...
I have hatching eggs from my bearded silkies. All birds in this breeding pen were shown at the Hollister show. My splash hen was BV. In the pen are splash, white, blue and black. I am located in Salinas, CA .... I may have chicks available in a few weeks.

I tried the "dry hatch method" I did not add a drop of water to my bator until day 18. The humidity in the bator from day 1-18 was around 30-40% on day 18 it was up to 60-65%. I had a full bator...36 eggs I think and 3 chicks hatched and everyone else died in their shells.... so any ideas on...
So one of my chickens died the other day and I had no idea why. Well I think it may have been mites because today I went into my Broody's area (a dog crate inside a coop) and I could see millions of mites crawling all over the outside of it. I sprayed some of the inside of the coop with Adam's...
One of my chickens randomly died today. When I found her she didn't look like she had an injuries (no blood). She was only 1 yr old. Any ideas how she could have died? Oh, also I let them free range during the day. Should I be concerned about the rest of my flock?
So I pulled out my incubator from the closet and it literally stinks like a dead animal! I washed it with dawn soap and vinegar and it still reeks. Anyone know how to get out the smell or whether it is going to effect my hatch?
Ok I have an odd question. I have silkies and I also have buff orpingtons, marans and americanas. The silkies and the other birds are kept separate from each other. My husband says that my silkies are very stinky (their poo) compared to the other birds. Is this normal?
So I want to grow a few of my own meat birds (primarily because I feed one of my dogs organic chicken and it cost waaaayyyy to much) and I called the feedstore asking them if they had unmedicated fed chicks. They said no, and told me that is was near impossible, they all die when fed...
I am new to silkies and have some questions, so please help!
Can they be housed on wire or is it bad for their feet?
Do nest boxes have to be at ground level?
Do they need a roost and if so how high of the ground should it be?
At what age do they start laying?
So do you get a better hatch rate if you put the eggs into a egg carton during lockdown? My eggs have been in an egg turner so they are currently positioned with small end down... Should I lay them on their side for lockdown or leave in an egg carton?
I'm thinking of buying a couple of Buffs that currently run with a rooster. Any idea how long their eggs will be fertile for after the rooster is taken out? Or will only the first egg be fertilized ( I am assuming this is the case)
