I have about 15 various breeds of hens. I haven't collected an egg in almost two months. We have had a long string of freezing nights. But I have never gone this long without collecting an egg. I did get one egg two days in a row, but now nothing again.
Any ideas?
I found a couple of eggs on the bottom of the hen house and since they weren't in the nesting boxes, gave them the "float" test. Well they floated and when they were opened exploded like rotten eggs. A couple of days later I found two more. This time I shook them and I could hear the insides...
I had a broody hen sitting on three eggs in the hen house. After a couple of days she was off the eggs and I noticed there were 13 eggs. I guess when she got off for awhile other hens laid new eggs. I moved the hen and the eggs to a separate hen house. I picked her up last night and saw...
I had a hen hatch out 7 chicks. Never did find the shells. I had another hen sitting on 5 eggs. Yesterday I went out and the eggs were gone and she was sitting on one little chick. Do hens eat the shells after the chicks hatch? Do they eat the unhatched eggs?
Thanks.
I lost over half of my flock to hawks. They would strick in the middle of the day, near the neighbors fence (the chickens were free ranging). I, or my neighbor, would come home to vultures eating the leftovers so we could never tell what happened. Finally, with the help of Backyard Forum, I...
I am a newbie at this. One of my Bantam hens showed up (in the chicken run - I had no idea she was setting or where she was setting) with seven cute, newly hatched chicks. Can I leave the hen and her chicks in the chicken run with the rest of the chickens (she takes them under the chicken coop...
I let my hens, and three roosters, free range over 1.5 acres. For the past week I have found a dead chicken, almost every day, near the far fence with its belly eaten out. Sometimes I just find parts of a chicken. My neighbor has called me at work and said, "Vultures in your pasture again...
I have numerous hens, but a couple of my eggs have extremely thin shells. They break when other hens set on them or if I try to clean them off. The hens have "all they can eat" oyster shells. Could this be a result of age? Bought some at an auction so I don't know how old they are.
Thanks...
Want to sell some of my fertile French Copper Maran eggs. Where do I keep them while I wait to collect enough (i.e. counter top, cool dark place, etc.) and how long can I keep them before they are no good?
Also, I have 20 hens and three roosters. Is that a good enough ratio? If I sell them...
I have a 40x40 chicken run made with 4' tall wire fencing. I clip their wings, but they keep getting out. I watched them jump to the top of the fence, rest there, then jump over. Yesterday, I heard a "I laid an egg" cackle but paid no attention to it as it came from across the street. I then...
Thanks for all of your heartfelt thoughts. This one was a Leghorn. The first one was a RIR.
I will try some frozen bottles and stop watering down the run. I don't water the coop.
As for ventilation, there is a six inch gap from the top of the sides to the roof. Should I cut some windows?
About a week or two ago I had a hen have some sort of seizure and die right in front of me. Today, I went to gather eggs and there was a hen dead in a nesting box. No marks on it. This morning she was fine. I threw some greens and some ears of corn on the compost pile and she went at it.
It...
Let my hens out of their coop this morning, everything and everyone looked fine. Watered and fed as normal. Came back out at noon to let them out to free range and one RIR hen was just sitting there making a weird noise and almost gasping. I helped her out of the run and into my backyard with...
I tried to candle it, using one of my brooder lamps, but couldn't tell as I almost blinded myself
New at this chicken thing.
I have 10 two week old French Black Copper Maran chicks, but I think they are too old to put under a broody hen.

I have eight hens and a rooster in two coops that both open up to a 40x40 run. They also have an opening that lets them into our back yard (about 3/4 of an acre) so they can free range.
Well, once they started getting into my wife's flower gardens (even though we put wire around them) and...
I let one of my broody hens sit on an egg to see what will happen. Today is the 21st day and she is still sitting. I don't think the egg is fertile, though the hens are running with a rooster.
If the egg doesn't hatch will she eventually quite being broody or do I need to do something...
