Temptation in the form of a cow?

I will! We are just so excited but also a little terrified. Because I'm slightly obsessed - here's a youtube video of our curious little steer, Seamus, and his little sidekick, Rooney (Matilda is in the background). Sorry for the low quality - my husband only had his cell phone to catch some...

Temptation in the form of a cow?

I recently brought home 3 Dexters, my first experience with cattle, and they've been incredibly sweet! I did a lost of research before settling on this breed and I chose them mostly because I kept reading about how gentle they are. So far, at least, they've lived up to that description...

    Is Johnson Grass Hay safe???

was that from heating johnson grass hay or the green grass? I only have it in the dried, hay form, none of it on the land, so I'm wondering if the johnson hay is dangerous.

    Is Johnson Grass Hay safe???

Thank you for your note - that makes me feel a lot better. We are very new to owning livestock and I'm freaking out that we might have poisoned our new little cows and donkeys. It does sound like it will be fine - and the hay is well dried and not moldy. I'll definitely keep an eye on it, but...

    Is Johnson Grass Hay safe???

Thank to everyone for your replies! We bought the hay from a reputable operation and I have a hard time thinking they sell that much hay in bulk if it would end up killing a lot of animals. It still makes me very nervous, and I'll try not to do it again - but with the drought - the coastal...

    Is Johnson Grass Hay safe???

Coastal hay has gotten pretty scarce in my area and so we just bought a round bale of johnson hay for the cows and donkeys. I should have researched this first, but just assumed it was fine since so much is being sold around here. How safe is johnson grass (or how dangerous) when it's hay...

    Dexter cattle

Hi there! I see that some of you keep dexters, and I'd love to hear a little about your experiences with them. We're just about to put some money down on three (dun steer calf, red steer calf, dun heifer), but I want to know how they've been for you. This will be my first experience with...

Donkey vs. Llama for guarding livestock???

Hi Connie! Where is your land? Ours is in Manor, just east of Austin. The more I research, the more I think we'll be getting a few head of cattle to work towards ag exemption until we can be out there daily. We just found a nice deal on 3 little longhorns. I dream of having horses out there...

Donkey vs. Llama for guarding livestock???

Thank you bluebirdfarm!! I see that you also have a llama? Does the llama get along well with everyone too? Can you tell if the llamas or donkeys act as better guard animals?

Donkey vs. Llama for guarding livestock???

So with adequate pasture, your stock are able to get enough food/nutrients? We have 15 acres with mesquite and brush, some grasses and all types of vegetation. I don't know how much supplemental feed they will require. Again - sorry for all the questions - just trying to learn from...

Donkey vs. Llama for guarding livestock???

so do they generally just graze? or do you feed them separately daily? We are not able to be at the land daily. Although neighbors will be checking our stock, I just need to know how much feeding they will require - especially if they must be fed separately!

Donkey vs. Llama for guarding livestock???

Do you have to feed your donkeys separately from the goats and sheep? I've read that donkeys can't eat some of the stuff that's in ruminants food. Thanks to all for the advice - I can't wait to get the animals and put up pics!

Donkey vs. Llama for guarding livestock???

I know with donkeys it's better to have just one out there. Do you know if this is true for dogs? I would rather have two dogs out there if I'm not around every day then to just have the one. So I should buy a pyranees puppy (or puppies) and just keep it in the pasture with the goats?? I'm...

Donkey vs. Llama for guarding livestock???

I have never heard of a maremma. What is that? Because I won't be out there daily, I just feel strange leaving a guard dog on the land - I'm sure that's not rational of me - but it's because I'm so used to dogs being pets. I feel like they will require more daily care. Is that correct?

Donkey vs. Llama for guarding livestock???

Oh no! I had not heard this about llamas. I am leaning towards a llama since I have heard mixed reviews about donkeys, although it seems to be fine if you have a jenny. We are not living on the land yet and will have neighbors check on the goats and guard animal until we're able to move out...

Donkey vs. Llama for guarding livestock???

I'm new at all this - help!! My husband and I recently bought 15 acres that we'll be slowly shaping into a farm. Our first task is to mend fences before purchasing a small flock of goats to help remove the brush and work towards an ag exemption. Being in central TX, we have a major problem...

    Should I be worried?!

From what I've been reading, avian pox is viral and does need to run its course. You can provide some support treatments (like putting iodine on the spots to help dry them faster) but overall, there is no treatment. If you search for avian pox on this site, you'll come up with lots of...

    Should I be worried?!

That's awful. I'm so sorry to hear what happened to your flock. How quickly did they get sores around their eyes? The two that have it only seem to have it on their combs and wattles and the sores don't look very irritated. Did it just continue to get worse and worse? I didn't see evidence...

    Should I be worried?!

After reading more posts on BYC, I realize that they likely have dry pox (I HOPE it's not wet). I'll keep my fingers crossed that none get wet pox. I wasn't aware of Avian Pox. Do most people vaccinate??

    Should I be worried?!

I'm positive that they are warts or pimple-like things. Thanks for the reply! If anyone has heard of this before, please let me know.
