We have our coop in our very large cinderblock barn. Dirt floor. We have a roo, and 8 hens. Feeders and waterers all hang from the ceiling from chains. Mice STILL get in. We have a barn cat that does a great job, but can't get to all of them. We had a 5 gallon bucket mounted to the wall in...
I've heard resting a chicken in the fridge 2 days is perfect. You don't need to buy a fancy vaccuum sealer. Just a nice freezer bag should do, or if your birds are bigger, you can buy big plastic bags at Wal-Mart and use a twist tie to close them. I would double bag to prevent freezer burn...
Welcome aboard from SW Virginia! We're only 60 miles from the Tn line! I just started with the chickens, and have (9) 3 week old chicks. I'm already planning more. My family and I are obsessed with them. In fact, we go into the coop in the evenings and just WATCH. My husband said he's...
Thought I'd share this great article on the deep litter method. I've already started using it with my (9) 3 week old chicks, and have zero smell. Hope you enjoy!

John,
I have (9) 3 week old chicks and I just switched them from a quart feeder to a 3 gallon feeder. lol We were filling up the quart feeder everyday, and thought it would be wise to go ahead and put a bigger feeder in. I let them "free feed" all day, which just means I let them eat...
I'm new to chickens myself, but I believe that scratch is fine to give youngsters. As long as you are giving some sort of grit. I bought parakeet gravel at the local pet store, and it's small enough for my 3 week olds. I've been debating giving scratch, myself.
Also, I've given my girls...
I'm new to chickens myself, but have found my 3 week old girls love meal worms, and plain yogurt. I give them a bowl of yogurt a night, and they come running! It's a great source of calcium. I wouldn't advise any fruit or flavored yogurt due to the artificial sweeteners. I have heard, and...
I have 2 1/2 week old chicks, have gone out everyday to feed, water, spend time with them...I offer treats (mealworms, superworms, yogurt) but they still act scared to death of me!
I call them when I go into the coop, they know I have treats, and act VERY curious but wont gather round me...
Thanks everyone! My wonderful hubby is home today and has been instructed to "free the peeps!" They will have the heat lamp on during the night, so if it's a bit too chilly, they can get warm.
I'm so addicted to these girls!!!
I'm in a situation similar to yours. My problem is that in Virginia, where we live, it's been in the 80's and 90's during the day, 60's at night. I've just posted about this same thing. My girls are 2 1/2 weeks old and I think getting too hot in their brooder. I think I'm going to let them...
Hi all! I'm new to the chick rearing thing...I have 9 new chicks...all 2 1/2 weeks old. They are all growing like weeds, eating well (already have had meal worm, superworm and yogurt treats!) feathering out beautifully, etc. Here in Va it's been in the 80's and 90's all week, 60's at night...
I'm planning my coop now, and will have 9 hens in a 120 sq ft coop (converted horse stall) with access to the outside, 2 windows. I'm planning my roosts, and have heard a lot of talk about poop trays for underneath. I'm planning on doing the deep litter method with pine shavings. Do I need to...
I'm in Rural Retreat, Va. Wythe Co...So I'm neighbors to both Russell, and Grayson Co!!! It's nice to "meet" you all. I"m expecting my chicks mid may! I'm super EGGcited!
