Help! Sick Hen! Vomiting clear liquid, loose stools, lethargy, pale comb. Is drinking...

We have had wierd poops in our run for the past week. I had inspected all my hens and found a red mite, just one tiny mite, on one of my hens. I went out to dust all the hens with DE and noticed one hen was very lethargic. I picked her up to dust her and she vomited a clear liquid. Pale comb...

Sponsored Post Congratulations MamaNini! You won a beautiful coop from Handcrafted Coops!

My advice is simple. Be prepared. We thought we'd go ahead and get our chicks and build the run as they grew. Such a dumb idea. Those chicks grow SO unbelievably fast. Which of course left us with five gigantic pullets ready to hit the coop. We were not ready! We had to rush to get the run built...

Mysterious chicken death last night. Lost my beautiful Buff Brahma.

Wondering what on earth could have happened to her last night. It did not freeze so she couldn't have been too cold? It looks like she dropped dead right off the roost last night. So sad to find her this morning. No obvious signs that I can see. I am a new chicken keeper as of last spring...

    i hate chicken wire

Another tip! The wire that comes annoyingly interwoven throughout the roll...use it to "weave" shut the gaps between to runs of it. It's like sewing with wire! I thought it was resourceful, but it is time consuming. Zip ties work great too like was suggested. I've been too stubborn to break them...

    i hate chicken wire

I'm on my third roll of 1" 20 gauge. I would have cursed at it outloud, but I have small children. It is wonky, unwieldy and wacky stuff. Rubber dipped gloves and a staple gun. I will temp. clip it somewhere as I work to keep it from springing back in my face, and reset when I get ahead to that...

Chick in constant state of panic, * UPDATE*

Hm. Maybe inspect her close up. Specifically...her bottom. Grose yes, but I had a chic that was pasted up and was completely blocked off from going potty. Once I helped her with that situation she happy and is now a thriving chic. Don't think she would have made it 24 more hours otherwise...

Chick in constant state of panic, * UPDATE*

Sounds like maybe she's too hot? Be sure the temp is around 90-95 degrees for new babies. And I think they say raise the heat lamp up five degrees every week. We hung the heat lamp on our brooder off to one side so they can escape the heat if they need too. I wonder though...hm.

Egg prices and DH's oppinion UHG

$1.25 a dozen for homegrown eggs? That's giving them away. Out here they go for $3-$4 a dozen for farm fresh. Are people not in the know yet about how much nicer home grown eggs are? Hm. Perplexing....

    Vinegar on chickens

I read that adding a little apple cider vinegar to the water was a way to help the good bacteria in their systems thrive. (the kind that thrives in acidic conditions) I also read that chickens sense of smell and taste is not good but hearing and eyesight is excellent. So my guess would be that...

    Greetings from Oregon!

should I not be offering scratch as a treat? the feed store gave us some "chic scratch" and also "chic grit" I have been giving the scratch as a from my hand treat/bribe to get them used to me...suppose I could just use the starter feed if the scratch is a no no.

    Brooder Materials

We have started our six chics in a large plastic storage bin. It's clear, which is nice since they are viewable from the couch. We've had a lot of fun with them so far. I just folded some hardware cloth to make a lid for it. I'm sort of getting the feeling I will have to upgrade to a...

    Greetings from Oregon!

Hello BYC peeps... I am an overjoyed rookie chic mother of six adorable baby chickens. We live in the rural suburbs of Oregon, and are so looking forward to raising ourselves some beautiful hens. I grew up on a 14 acre hazelnut farm, but have zero experience with chickens. I think my family...
