    Parrot/cross beak

This chick is going on four months. She didn't start out this way but it developed relatively quickly and gotten worse as she's grown. She has kept up with her fellow newbies but is now starting to trail them in terms of weight and size. She must be able to eat but I'm not sure how much and I...

    Airlite cardboard bedding

Has anybody used this? I got a bag of it to try but didn't really know if it made sense in the coop. The threads I've searched haven't given me any answers.

    How did this happen?

This is the first time I've ever had one of these. New-laying hens, about two months now. Surface is rough. Is this indicative of a problem or just a bloop? That's a quarter for reference.

Treating resp inf, wonder what to do next

I have my hen in sick bay in the house. The first night I really assumed she would be dead in the morning - open-mouthed gasping, but she was much better next day. She's had six of ten Tylan shots, Vet Rx in her water, Nutri-Drench down her throat. I wondered if her crop was involved and that...

Gates - how to electrify and apron?

We're making progress with our large chicken yard. All the posts are set and I'm about to get wire, etc. I'm going to have two gates: One 4' and one 6' (double gate). I'll be running electric wire, two strands, at the bottom and a short way up from there. There will be underground wiring at...

    How high the fence??

I'm setting up a large chicken yard, too large to cover, and I'm trying to decide how high the fence should be. Should I go 5' or 6'? I plan to do an electric wire around the bottom. That seemed to be the consensus to the question of top or bottom wire. The yard will be in a wooded area...

X-beaked chick - how to teach about mash?

One of my two-week-old chicks has a pronounced crossed beak. I've tried getting her to eat mash but she's not interested. Is there a way I can get her to try it? Her beak has gotten worse so I know she's not getting as much to eat. I've been droppering water into her and have done a little...

Clipped beak too short!! What to do?

I just clipped my parrot/cross-beaked chick and clipped too close. Can't get stypic powder to stick. What now??

Large open yard - what do you think?

After years of free-ranging, I've had too much death and destruction; most recently a bobcat systematically took out my flock. I have one chicken left because he dropped her when we ran after him. I've always had a small yard for growing out chicks but now I'm going to build a large yard -...

Lone hen, broody - will she mother new chicks?

My flock was decimated by a bobcat so I have one lone hen who is recovering from injury. She has gone broody, I don't know why, and she's very intent on it. She sits that empty nest around the clock except for moments for forced exercise in the chicken yard. I plan to order a batch of chicks...

Top on my chicken yard or no?

I've always free-ranged my flock but have a smallish chicken yard. I've lost most of my flock to predators lately, namely a bobcat, so I'm going to have to change my habits. I plan to build a larger chicken yard for their primary day-time turn-out (yard is attached to coop) and I don't know...

Oxine users - what's an alternative?

I tried to order some Oxine from Revival and it's on indefinite backorder, other places as well, because there were problems with leaking and bursting containers. I need something to add to my horse and chicken waterers to keep the water cleaner. Anyone have any recommendations? I'm really...

What to do without Oxine?? **Moved**

I tried to order some Oxine from Revival but it's backordered indefinitely. Revival said they were having problems with the containers leaking and bursting so the manufacturer has halted shipments until they figure out what to do. I checked another couple of places and found backorders there...

Hen w/featherless back - winter coming

I have a1-1/2 year old hen who has a bare spot on her back which extends a little way under her wings. I think it initially began when I had a rooster that was on her a lot. The rooster is gone. Some of the spot filled in but this last area refuses. I know it can take a while for feathers to...

    Feathers are fading

My New Hampshire looks more like a strawberry blonde than a redhead. I thought maybe it was caused by being wormy but deworming didn't help. I recently discovered the flock had lice - did the second treatment yesterday. I don't know how long they'd had them before I discovered it. Could that...

    De-lousing the coop

My chickens have lice, I'm done wailing, and now it's time to take action. I'm going to use Sevin dust for the girls. Do I need to strip the entire coop then put down Sevin, or can I mix Sevin into the existing shavings? Also, do I need to spray the walls with Oxine or anything?

Worms coming out hen's backside UPDATE

I'm so horrified I can hardly stand it. One of my hens got thumped by a car two days ago. She ran back into the yard but limped with a clearly painful leg. She hid in the brush and once I determined that she was breathing normally, I let her stay until time to go into the coop. I felt around...

    Bitter with Baggage

Anybody seen Bitter with Baggage Seeks Same? This is probably old news, but I was just introduced to this at Christmas by getting some notecards as a gift. Those little pipe-cleaner chicks are hilarious! Type in that title and you can see the books, etc on Amazon. I think she's got three...

Chicken w/upper resp problem - danger to Afr. greys?

I had planned to keep a friend's two A.G.'s for a week but I told her that one of my hens has had an upper respiratory infection. There is certainly a chance that there is CRD in my flock. My friend and I are thinking that it wouldn't be a good idea for me to keep her birds even though they...

Will I always be contaminated and contagious?

I have a hen that I treated for what I think is CRD. I had a rooster that died a couple of days ago with blue wattle and comb. No breathing problems but maybe it was the same thing. Am I always going to be contaminated if all my flock are carriers? Am I contagious to other birds?
